Ademola Lookman's penalty miss against West Ham seems like a different lifetime following his electric performance in the Europa League final.

The London-born winger fired the Serie A side to their first ever European trophy with a historic hat-trick on Wednesday night in Dublin, brushing off Bundesliga Champions Bayer Leverkusen and ending their 51-game unbeaten streak in the process.

Three shots, three on target, three goals. Lookman - who came through Charlton's academy - put in the performance of his career as Atalanta saw Leverkusen off with a 3-0 win.

It's crazy to think that just under four years ago, Lookman had his head in his hands and his name in the headlines for all the wrong reasons after a failed attempt at a Panenka penalty.

He had been given a glorious chance to make it 1-1 in Fulham's clash against West Ham in November 2020.

However, his chipped penalty was read by Lukasz Fabianski, who easily caught his attempt, condemning Fulham to a 1-0 defeat.

Fast forward to the eve of the Europa League final and Atalanta's first chance to win a trophy since their Italian Cup victory in 1963, and Lookman is the hero of the hour.

His outstanding treble saw the 26-year-old become only the sixth player to score a hat-trick in a European final - and the first since Jupp Heynckes for Borussia Monchengladbach in the 1975 UEFA Cup.

In the comments of a YouTube video of that miss at the London Stadium, fans rushed to hail Lookman for bouncing back from that moment.

One fan wrote: "Came here after his hat trick against Leverkusen.

"Every time I heard about Lookman I always thought about this penalty, now I’ll think of him as the player that had one of the best individual performances in any European final. Insane."

A second said: "Coming here today after his masterclass against Leverkusen. Truly a master class."

In truth, Lookman's talent being properly appreciated has been a long time coming.

He was playing Sunday League in south London with Waterloo before Charlton snapped him up for their academy in 2014.

It wasn't long before he made his debut and one-and-a-half seasons with the Addicks was enough for Premier League clubs to come sniffing and for England youth call-ups to begin.

Everton signed him in January 2017 for initial £7.5m potentially rising to £11m with add-ons.

But limited game time at Goodison Park and a loan to RB Leipzig led him to sign for the German side. Two loans with Fulham and Leicester followed with nothing to really write home about.

Then, in 2022, he made a permanent move to Atalanta, and the rest is history.

Speaking to TNT after the game, the man of the moment said: "One of the best nights of my life.

"Amazing performance from the team, we did it, we did it, we did it! Fantastic.

"They do always say third time lucky, so yeah it is for us today [winning a final at the third attempt this season].

"I'm just happy we won. We won today so yes, very pleased. 100 per cent [we're partying tonight]! We've got to celebrate, we made history tonight."

Lookman's mentor and former coach at grassroots team Waterloo, Felix Emanus, was overcome with emotions when he spoke to TNT Sports after the game.

"I really can't tell you my emotions - sky high," he said. "We've been dreaming about this for a long time, since Ade was a kid at Waterloo. Tonight was a dream come true.

"I cried when the third goal went in and I don't cry. People watching this now and may say, 'what a sissy'. I'm so glad for Ade. He works hard, a quiet lad, sometimes misunderstood because of his quietness because he's a great kid.

"He wants to learn, wants to always get better and wants to reach the top."

After being able to properly settle at a club for the first time, the Nigeria star netted 15 goals in 43 appearances for Atalanta this season.

But despite him being 26 years old and eight years of professional football under his belt, Wednesday's final in Dublin really feels like just the beginning for Lookman's career.
