Over 2,000 Lamborghini Urus SUVs recalled over potential hood detachment

    What's the story

Lamborghini is recalling 2,133 units of its Urus SUV due to a defect that could cause the hood to detach at high speeds. The recall has affected the 2023-2024 Urus Performante and Urus S models. The automaker estimates that approximately 2% of these vehicles may have this defect, which originates from an inconsistent building process at a supplier level.

    Worrying

Defective hood latch striker rivets cause for concern

The issue with the Urus SUVs arises from the bonnet latch striker rivets, which may have insufficient deformation due to an improper manufacturing process. This problem becomes evident at speeds above 151km per hour, where small gaps could form between the bonnet and the front bumper. The increased airflow can over-stress the latch mechanism, leading to its failure and potentially causing the hood, to snap back or completely detach from the vehicle.

    Investigation details

Investigation and response to hood defect

Lamborghini first became aware of the issue in August last year, when it got two warranty claims in Europe regarding misalignment of the Urus's hood and fender. Despite not finding any additional cases at that time, the automaker launched an investigation with its supplier, and worked to better the manufacturing process. However, a complete detachment of a hood on an Urus in Indonesia this February, prompted another inquiry which led to the discovery of defective rivet studs in the latch.

    Rectification plan

Lamborghini's plan to rectify the defect

Starting early July, Lamborghini will start notifying affected buyers about the recall. Owners will be instructed to take their cars to a dealer for inspection. To rectify this issue, Lamborghini may repair the bonnet, install a striker support plate, or both. The supplier has already began building more robust parts for Lamborghini since early February.
