PLAYER OF THE YEAR

It’s not often that a junior is tasked with leading a team that has won three consecutive CIF Southern Section Division 1 championships.

Foothill coach Cristina Rodriguez trusted junior Brynn Perkins with that responsibility this season.

With just two senior starters on the team, Rodriguez met with Perkins prior to the season about stepping into the leadership role.

“Even before we picked captains, she (Rodriguez) gave me a call and was saying that she wanted to see me step into a leadership role,” Perkins said. “She definitely talked me through how she wanted me to step into that position, and then it was up to me to be able to step up and be a mentor on and off the field.”

Perkins is the third consecutive Foothill player to be recognized as Orange County player of the year. Elena Torres received the recognition in 2021-2022 and Mia Marchetti was selected in 2023.

“Elena started almost everything I know about lacrosse. She was my biggest mentor and after that Mia had to step up big-time and that was a huge inspiration to me,” Perkins said. “We graduated 11 seniors last year and that was an eye-opener for me that it was my time to be the next person to make an impact.”

Perkins led Foothill with 96 points (69 goals, 27 assists) this season and had 15 caused turnovers. She helped lead Foothill to its fourth consecutive CIF championship appearance and a 17-3 overall record.

“I definitely couldn’t have done it without my coaches and the best teammates,” Perkins said. “They are huge in my success and I give all the credit in the world to them.”

Perkins is committed to Drexel University.

COACH OF THE YEAR

Madi DeVries, JSerra

Six years ago, JSerra did not have a varsity girls lacrosse team.

This season, the Lions won the CIF-SS Division 2 championship.

DeVries used the success of the other sports teams at JSerra to inspire the girls lacrosse team before the playoffs began.

“I showed them our trophy case, and we were the only trophy case out there that has nothing in it,” DeVries said. “We sat down and talked about the importance of doing it as a team and that we have what it takes to be a championship team.”

DeVries was an All-County player at Capistrano Valley High in 2018. She is the first woman in girls lacrosse to be recognized on the All-County team as a player and be named coach of the year.

“I understand the dynamic of the girls when they are out there on the field, partially because I’m young and I’ve had those experiences more recently than a lot of other coaches have,” DeVries said.

DeVries led JSerra to 16 wins this season, the most for the school since 2010, one year before the program ceased to exist for seven years.

“Our seniors, they only had 14 girls in the entire program,” DeVries said. “To see how quickly we were able to pull this off is the most rewarding to me.”
