The suspect, whose name has not yet been released, was shot on the afternoon of May 14 in the area of South Third and Kenton streets. LMPD says he died on Wednesday at the hospital.
Police said the teen was a suspect in one of at least six homicides from the week prior.
Authorities said when they found the suspect, he pulled out a firearm and ran. They said LMPD then tackled the suspect to the ground and made multiple requests for him to drop the gun.
Police said the suspect fired his weapon, and an LMPD officer fired one round, hitting the 17-year-old.
No one else was injured in the shooting, police said.
LMPD said they would release body camera footage of the shooting within 10 business days, per their policy, so video should be available by next week.
WLKY talked to the family of the original homicide victim. They identified him as David Martinez and said the suspect was one of his best friends.
