17-year-old homicide suspect dies days after being shot by LMPD officer
STUDIO. JAMIE, WHAT LED TO THE SHOOTING? OFFICERS SAY THEY TOLD THE TEEN SEVERAL TIMES TO DROP HIS GUN, BUT HE WOULDN’T LET GO OF HIS WEAPON. AND POLICE SAY ONCE THE SUSPECT FIRED AN OFFICER SHOT THE TEEN. NEIGHBORS IN THE WILDER PARK NEIGHBORHOOD WALKED OUTSIDE TUESDAY EVENING TO FIND CRIME SCENE TAPE AND POLICE CARS RIGHT OUTSIDE THEIR DOORSTEPS. I’M ALMOST GETTING USED TO IT BECAUSE I MEAN, THIS IS JUST SOMETHING THAT YOU SEE EVERY DAY. IT’S ALMOST GETTING TO BE LIKE A NORMAL THING. THE POLICE CHIEF SAYS LMPD OFFICERS WERE CONDUCTING SURVEILLANCE NEAR SOUTH THIRD AND WEST KENTON STREET, NOT FAR FROM CHURCHILL DOWNS, FOR HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION. THAT’S WHEN DETECTIVES SAY THEY SAW A SUSPECT OF INTEREST, A 17 YEAR OLD FROM ONE OF SEVERAL HOMICIDE WHICH HAPPENED LAST WEEK WHEN OFFICERS APPROACH THE SUSPECT. HE DISPLAYED A FIREARM AND BEGAN TO FLEE FROM DETECTIVES. OFFICERS SAY THEY TACKLED THE TEEN AND WRESTLED FOR THE GUN IN HIS HAND, BUT THEY SAY HE WOULDN’T DROP THE WEAPON AFTER MULTIPLE REQUESTS TO RELEASE THE GUN, THE SUSPECT DISCHARGED THE FIREARM, AT WHICH POINT ONE OF OUR OFFICERS RETURNED FIRE, STRIKING THE SUSPECT ONE TIME. POLICE SAY THE TEEN WAS RUSHED TO THE HOSPITAL AND NEIGHBORS SAY THEY’RE HOPING THE SHOOTING THROUGHOUT THE METRO WILL END. I JUST PRAY THAT HE PULLS THROUGH AND, YOU KNOW, GET HIS LIFE TOGETHER. WHATEVER IT IS THAT CAUSED HIM TO BE IN ALL THIS CHAOS AND ASKED FOR POLICE, THEY’RE CONTINUING TO ASK FOR THE COMMUNITY’S SUPPORT. I ENCOURAGE THE COMMUNITY TO PLEASE ENCOURAGE ONE ANOTHER TO SPEAK UP AND SPEAK OUT AGAINST THE SENSELESS GUN VIOLENCE THAT HAS TAKEN PLACE IN OUR CITY AND ON THOSE INDIVIDUALS WHO DO NOT VALUE LIFE. POLICE SAY THE TEEN WAS SENT TO THE HOSPITAL WITH LIFE THREATENING INJURIES. LMPD SAYS THE BODY CAM VIDEO OF THAT INCIDENT WILL BE RELEASED IN THE NEXT TEN DAYS.
