HOSPITAL WITH THIS DANNY. WELL, A GROUP OF FEMALE SURGEONS HERE AT NEWTON WELLESLEY HOSPITAL SAY THEIR PROFESSION HAS NOT BEEN REPRESENTED BY BARBIE. SO THEY MADE THEIR OWN PROTOTYPE WITH THE HOPES THAT IT WOULD INSPIRE YOUNG GIRLS TO LOOK INTO THEIR FIELD AND WHEN YOU PRESENT A CHILD WITH A TOY, YOU POTENTIALLY PLANT THE SEED OF AN IDEA. WITH SCRUBS ON AND EQUIPMENT IN HAND. AND THESE BARBIES ARE READY FOR THE OPERATING ROOM. PEDIATRIC SURGEON, DOCTOR CORNELIA GRIGGS HELPED MAKE THESE PROTOTYPE BARBIES. AFTER A STUDY, SHE HELPED PUBLISH FOUND THAT OUT OF NEARLY 90 BARBIES, ONLY THREE REPRESENTED MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS. THERE WERE A LOT OF BARBIES THAT WORKED IN FIELDS WITH CHILDREN, BUT WE NOTICED THAT THERE WERE NO SURGEON BARBIES ON TOP OF THAT, THE BARBIES THAT DID EXIST DIDN’T HAVE THE PROPER EQUIPMENT. SOME OF THEM WERE GIVEN STETHOSCOPES, BUT NO MASKS, NO APPROPRIATE WAY TO TIE BACK THEIR HAIR. AND I THINK A REALISTIC REPRESENTATION OF WHAT IT’S LIKE TO BE A SURGEON OR A WOMAN IN A STEM FIELD, INCLUDING THE APPROPRIATE PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT, IS REALLY IMPORTANT TO SHOW KIDS. DOCTOR GRIGGS SAYS THIS RESEARCH IS SUPPOSED TO BE LIGHTHEARTED AND THAT THERE HAS BEEN A LOT OF PROGRESS MADE IN TERMS OF REPRESENTATION, BUT SHE DOES HOPE IF THESE PROTOTYPE BARBIES MAKE IT TO MARKET, THEY WOULD INSPIRE YOUNG GIRLS TO LOOK INTO MORE MALE DOMINATED PROFESSIONS, ONES YOU CAN ABSOLUTELY BE A SURGEON AND WEAR PINK. YOU CAN WEAR A BARBIE SCRUB CAP AND STILL BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY AND STILL BE EXCELLENT AT YOUR JOB. DOCTOR GRIGGS DID JOKE THAT SHE WOULD LOVE TO CONSULT WITH MATTEL IF THEY NEED HELP TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO MAKE A MORE REALISTIC MEDICAL PRO
