Alberta-based firm Pieridae Energy Limited has shut-in approximately 750 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boepd) production from its Ekwan field in northeast British Columbia due to wildfires burning in the Fort Nelson and Sierra areas.

Pieridae said in a news release that all personnel in the impacted area were evacuated safely.

According to the news release, Ekwan production will remain shut-in until it is safe to restart and necessary third-party infrastructure has returned to service. Pieridae’s Ekwan gas production flows to a third-party processing facility which was also recently shut-in and evacuated by the facility operator.

The company said it was not aware of any damage to company-owned infrastructure or equipment at this time. Additional safety and operations updates will be provided when significant changes occur, Pieridae stated.

In addition, Pieridae is making arrangements to temporarily shut-in uneconomic sour gas production in its northern Alberta areas of Findley, Lynx and Palliser, prior to the end of May. This is in response to current and forecasted summer Alberta Energy Company (AECO) natural gas prices. These areas will be reactivated once natural gas economics improve as it currently produces approximately 1,000 boepd of dry natural gas, Pieridae added.

To ensure safety, Pieridae will respond to changes in the wildfire situation to protect people, the environment, and company assets. The company said it is "grateful for the men and women fighting wildfires and those supporting evacuees in its communities". Additional safety and operations updates will be provided when significant changes occur, the company said.

Pieridae is a Canadian energy company headquartered in Calgary, Alberta. It describes itself as an upstream producer and midstream custom processor of natural gas, natural gas liquids (NGLs), condensate, and sulphur from the Canadian Foothills and adjacent areas in Alberta and in northeast British Columbia. Pieridae’s vision is to provide responsible, affordable natural gas and derived products to meet society’s energy security, it said.

According to Pieridae’s website, it is one of the largest Foothills producers in North America. Its upstream assets make up some of the biggest conventional gas reservoirs in the region. Across Alberta and British Columbia, its footprint stretches over one million gross acres of land; with ownership of three deep cut gas plants and more than 3,800 kilometers of pipelines. It produces roughly 40,000 - 45,000 boepd consisting of roughly 200 million cubic feet per day of gas and 8500 barrels per day of liquids.
