China's employment situation stable in Apr 2024: Govt data

China's employment situation in April was stable in general with a declining unemployment rate, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

The country’s urban unemployment rate was 5 per cent in the month—down by 0.2 percentage point (pp) from in March. The rate was also lower than the 5.2 per cent reading a year ago.

The unemployment rate in 31 major Chinese cities was 5 per cent last month, and the rate for rural migrant workers was 4.5 per cent.

Between January and April, the average urban unemployment rate was 5.2 per cent—down from 5.4 per cent in the same period last year.

The government aims at creating over 12 million jobs in urban areas this year and keep the urban unemployment rate at about 5.5 per cent, a state-controlled news agency reported.

It has invested 11.5 billion yuan ($1.62 billion) so far this year to generate 250,000 jobs for rural residents, according to the National Development and Reform Commission.
