After having one head coach from 2014-2022, Charlotte Catholic's football program will be on its third leader since in as many seasons this fall.

Matthew Reilly announced that he has stepped down as the head coach of the Cougars. Reilly, previously the team's offensive coordinator, took over the program last offseason after the retirement of five-time state champion head coach Mike Brodowicz.

Reilly led Catholic to a 9-4 overall record in 2023, his lone season as the Cougars' head coach. Catholic reached the third round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association's 4A West playoffs, where it lost to eventual state champion Weddington.

The coach will be returning to St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati, he told HighSchoolOT. The destination is his alma mater. His entire family, including his parents and five younger siblings, are still in that area. It is the only job he would have wanted to leave Catholic for.

With Charlotte Catholic's opening, the Southwestern 4A Conference will now feature four new head coaches out of its seven member schools. The other SW4A teams with a new head coach this season will be Rocky River, Garinger, and Butler. See all head coaching changes at the link above.
