“Menys Turisme, Més Vida” (Less Tourism, More Life) has transitioned from a protest slogan against overtourism in Mallorca to the name of a new association. On Friday, this association held a significant meeting in Sineu, aimed at discussing strategies to mitigate overcrowding and planning protest actions.
Protests and Proposals
The sentiment at the assembly hall in Sineu’s secondary school was clear: “It’s going to be an intense summer.” The primary focus for protests is Palma Son Sant Joan Airport, with discussions about potentially bringing the airport to a standstill. Given the legal complications that such protests might entail, there was a suggestion to establish a resistance fund to cover any fines that might arise.
Calls for Collective Action
Key Proposals:
Political Context
Ramis pointed out the necessity of making changes during the current government period, expressing skepticism about relying on a potential future shift in political leadership. This criticism was directed at the left-wing coalition for its perceived inaction on the overcrowding issue.
Planned Demonstrations
The association “Menys Turisme, Més Vida” is gearing up for a summer of intense activity aimed at addressing the challenges of overtourism in Mallorca. Through strategic protests, collective action, and targeted proposals, the group seeks to alleviate the pressures of overcrowding and promote a sustainable approach to tourism that balances the needs of both residents and visitors.

As the summer holiday season begins this month, new research from ABTA Travel Money shows the average spending of UK holidaymakers on international vacations.
Despite the ongoing cost of living challenges affecting some families, UK travelers are allocating more funds for their holiday expenses abroad, with an average expenditure of £369 per person for a short trip and £660 for an extended vacation.
There has been an increase in average spending since 2022, with expenditures rising by over £59 for a short international break and by £231 per person for a longer stay abroad.
Families with older children (aged 5 and above) tend to spend the most on short breaks, averaging £431. For longer vacations, the highest spending group is travelers aged 55-64, who spend an average of £721.
This summer, tourists visiting any destination using the Euro will benefit from a strengthened pound, which has gained 2.1% against the Euro and 65% against the Turkish Lira since last year.
ABTA Travel Money advises vacationers to purchase local currency in the UK before departing to avoid high ATM and banking fees abroad, ensuring they have cash on hand for taxis, small vendors, and local shopping where cards might not be accepted.
Graeme Buck, Director of Communications for ABTA Travel Money, said:
“People are spending more while on holiday overseas and that can’t just be put down to inflation. Over the past two years, UK prices have risen by a total of 9.3%3 whereas overseas holiday spend is up by 54% for a longer holiday.
“Add in more favourable exchange rates for many holiday destinations, we see over the last few years that there has been a clear shift towards people spending the spare money they may have on holidays and creating memories that will last a lifetime.
“Some of those memories are made possible by having cash with you, meaning you don’t miss out on something simply through not having planned your foreign currency before you leave.”

Tourists typically pay a premium and brave freezing temperatures to witness the mesmerizing dance of the aurora borealis. However, last weekend, skygazers around the globe were treated to a rare and spectacular display of auroras, simply by looking up. On the evening of May 10, these colorful displays, usually confined to the polar regions, extended as far as Mexico, southern Europe, and South Africa, filling the skies with vibrant pinks, greens, and purples.
Auroras Beyond the Poles
The Hidden Danger Behind the Beauty
While the auroras provided a stunning visual treat, they also highlighted a lurking threat. Quentin Verspieren, the European Space Agency’s space safety program coordinator, warned that these beautiful displays can be deceptive, masking the dangers of powerful solar storms. Mike Bettwy of the US Space Weather Prediction Center echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the “sinister potential impacts” of solar storms, such as disrupting power grids, damaging satellites, and exposing astronauts to harmful radiation.
Impact of Recent Geomagnetic Storms
The recent auroras were the result of the most powerful geomagnetic storm since the “Halloween Storms” of October 2003, which caused blackouts in Sweden and damaged power infrastructure in South Africa. Although there appears to have been less damage from the latest solar storms, the full impact often takes weeks to become apparent. Reports indicated that some self-driving farm tractors in the United States halted due to GPS guidance system failures caused by the storm.
Origins and Future Predictions
These auroras and their associated effects stem from massive explosions on the sun’s surface, which shoot out plasma, radiation, and magnetic fields at incredible speeds. The recent activity originated from a sunspot cluster 17 times the size of Earth, which has been active over the past week. On Tuesday, this cluster released the strongest solar flare seen in years.
As this sunspot turns towards the edge of the sun’s disk, activity is expected to decrease temporarily. However, it will swing back into view in about two weeks, potentially aiming its outbursts at Earth once again. Meanwhile, another sunspot is coming into view, promising to trigger major solar activity in the coming days, according to Alexi Glover, ESA’s space weather service coordinator.
The recent aurora displays provided a rare and beautiful spectacle for tourists and residents around the world. However, they also serve as a reminder of the underlying dangers associated with solar storms. As we continue to marvel at these natural wonders, it is crucial to remain aware of the potential impacts on our technology and infrastructure.

The rise of ‘Leave No Trace’ marks a shift towards responsible outdoor practices, advocating minimal environmental impact and preservation of natural beauty.
Outdoor enthusiasts of all kinds are embracing a philosophy rooted in the idea of ‘take only memories, leave only footprints’. Leave No Trace is built on the notion of minimizing our negative impact on wilderness areas, combating the environmental harm caused by human activities.
Andy Halliday, the owner of The Expert Camper, shares three simple steps to ensure your next outdoor adventure is as sustainable as possible.
In situations where fire rings aren’t available or fire risk is high, consider using a portable cooking stove instead. Modern camping stoves provide a convenient and eco-friendly way to cook without open flames.
By following these three steps, we can all contribute to preserving the beauty of our natural spaces and ensuring they remain enjoyable for generations to come.
‘If you’re cold at night in an area that doesn’t allow open fires, use a camping stove to fill water bottles with hot water to put in your sleeping bag,’ advises Andy.
Moreover, adhering to Leave No Trace principles is imperative when using a portable stove. This involves following proper stove protocols and maintenance routines. Utilize the stove on durable surfaces like rock or compacted soil, maintain a safe distance from flammable materials, and ensure all cooking residue and food scraps are disposed of correctly to avoid attracting wildlife.
Avoiding the temptation to stray off designated trails for the sake of capturing an ideal photo is essential. Sticking to these trails isn’t just a suggestion; it’s a fundamental aspect of upholding Leave No Trace principles. Our footprints’ impact extends beyond what we see on the surface, affecting delicate ecosystems and habitats.
‘Every inch of off-trail terrain teams with life, from intricate plant ecosystems to bustling communities of insects, fungi, and microorganisms,’ says Andy. ‘These delicate systems are finely balanced, and a single misstep can disrupt them irreparably’.
Sticking to designated trails and durable surfaces not only reduces your environmental impact but also safeguards delicate habitats. This principle extends to designated camping sites, which are selected to minimize disruption to the ecosystem while ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for campers.
Additionally, taking the initiative to clean up after others can further enhance the sites you visit, aligning with the core principle of Leave No Trace.
‘I always bring a trash bag with me on camping and hiking trips, not just to properly dispose of my own waste, but to go the extra mile and collect any litter I encounter along the way,’ says Andy.
Picture every tossed wrapper or abandoned bottle as a potential blemish on the pristine wilderness. By taking the initiative to collect these items, you’re not only preventing environmental pollution but also setting a positive precedent for others to emulate.
Adhering to campfire safety, staying on designated paths, and cleaning up litter not only maintains the natural splendor of our wild spaces but also guarantees that upcoming generations can relish these outdoor havens for years to come. Andy emphasizes, “By embracing these straightforward practices, we can each contribute to safeguarding and cherishing our environment while reveling in the great outdoors.”

Africa is the top continent for international weddings, with an average of 5,185 monthly searches. Nigeria stands out with a higher volume of 6,583 searches per month. Texas leads the states interested in Nigerian weddings, followed by Illinois and New Jersey. Marriages in Nigeria can be categorized as “Special Marriages” when one or both partners are not Nigerian citizens, which typically incurs a fee of ₦37,000.00 (approximately $25.60).
Ethiopia is another popular African wedding choice for US couples, with an average of 4,518 monthly searches. While Colorado and Minnesota show some interest, Maryland leads with the most average monthly searches. Couples planning a wedding in Addis Ababa can expect to find small wedding packages for around 100 guests ranging from ETB 10,000 (approximately $174) to ETB 50,000 ($870).
Lebanon ranks fourth with an average monthly search volume of 3,696. It is popular among US couples in Indiana, Michigan, and Oklahoma, where it ranks as the third most searched wedding location. Lebanon only recognizes marriages performed by religious officials, such as churches or Islamic courts, so civil marriages cannot be legally obtained in the country.

Commenting on the findings, a spokesperson for Mark Broumand said:
“With wedding costs in the US skyrocketing to an average of $33,000 this year, a 14% increase from last year as reported by Forbes, it’s no wonder many couples are seeking more budget-friendly destination weddings.”
“However, careful planning is key. Understanding the legalities and requirements of your chosen destination is crucial to ensure a smooth and stress-free celebration. By familiarizing yourselves with these details beforehand, couples can focus on creating a truly magical and unforgettable wedding abroad.”
