Mooresville promotes Zach Mayo to head football coach

On Tuesday, the Mooresville Graded School District's Board of Education approved Zach Mayo as the next head football coach at Mooresville High School. Mayo was previously the high school's offensive coordinator.
He is taking over for previous head coach Joe Nixon, who left the post to become the county athletic director in Rowan County. Nixon took over Mooresville prior to the 2020 season. He led the Blue Devils to a combined record of 30-12 over his four seasons. The Blue Devils produced an overall record of 11-1 last fall, winning their second consecutive Greater Metro 4A Conference championship.
Mooresville's offense averaged 34.0 points-per-game under Mayo in 2023. The Blue Devils averaged 371.0 yards from scrimmage per game. Mooresville is set to return its starting quarterback Brody Norman, top rusher Eric Heal, and top defender Jamari Farmer in 2024.
The Blue Devils' football program has been consistently strong. Mooresville has reached three regional finals in school history (1995, 2000, and 2011) but has yet to break through to a state championship game.
