CHESTERFIELD — Town Meeting voters approved budgets and a slate of spending articles Monday, but split over the two petition articles on the ballot, Town Clerk Sandra Wickland reported.

By a 42-35 margin, voters decided against making the Cemetery Commission an elected rather than appointed body. But an even narrower majority, 39-36, approved a nonbinding petition to recommend that the town’s procurement officer become certified.

Eighty-two residents, or 8% of the town’s registered voters, attended the meeting.

Disposing of business in a little over two hours, voters approved a dozen articles involving fund transfers related to prior fiscal years, OK’d borrowing $250,000 for a Fire Department rescue truck and closed out the debt on two other vehicles.

The town’s $5,031,755 operating budget, funded by $4,567,817 in tax revenue, was approved unanimously, as were three free cash transfers, totaling $41,500, pertaining to improvements at the Ireland Street Cemetery, including a new stone wall and a parking area.

Voters also agreed to pay $3,000 for a granite marker with a brass plaque at the site of Samuel Eddy’s home on River Road. Eddy received the Medal of Honor for bravery in the last large battle of the Civil War before Appomattox. He was buried in Mount Cemetery after his death in 1909.

Town Meeting also agreed to add three associate members to the Conservation Commission.
