The Indo Daily: Portal of shame? Donal Fallon’s walking tour of infamous Dublin monuments

‘Portal’ of shame? The long history of infamous Dublin monuments, amid 'outrageous' flashing and 9/11 pranks

The Chime in the Slime, the Floozy in the Jacuzzi, the Stiletto in the Ghetto. These are just a few of the dubious nicknames Dubliners have given to certain notorious landmarks that have left an impression over the years.

And now, the Dublin Portal – dubbed The Eye in the Sty – joins the ranks of the headline-generating monuments that have caused tongues to wag on the capital’s main thoroughfare.

A slew of X-rated hi-jinks has seen the artful two-way webcam link with New York shut down, while a host of international media outlets have lined up to pour scorn on Irish people’s apparent lack of morals and self-control.

As the portal is temporarily switched off due to inappropriate behaviour, is it time to bow our heads in collective shame?

Today on The Indo Daily, Fionnán Sheahan is joined by Donal Fallon, author, historian and host of the ‘Three Castles Burning’ podcast, for a walking tour of O’Connell Street as we consider our troublesome portal into chaos, and look back on the questionable monuments of our past.
