Preview: San Diego’s top gymnasts gather Friday for Section championships

CIF San Diego Section Gymnastics Championships

When: 12:30 p.m. Friday

Where: La Costa Canyon High School

Admission: $12 for adults, $7 for students and seniors.

Participating teams: Mt. Carmel, Rancho Bernardo, Grossmont, La Costa Canyon, Steele Canyon, Torrey Pines, West Hills and Westview. West Hills and Torrey Pines won their league outright, while Mt. Carmel and Westview shared their respective league titles.

Compulsory gymnastics: The compulsory events kick off the slate of events — vault, bars, beam and floor — for the section title in gymnastics. Gymnasts to watch include Kaya Nepomuceno of Westview, Skylar Parga of Granite Hills, Cerie Yoo of Mt. Carmel, Ava De Mesa of Eastlake, Kenya Coulter of Rancho Bernardo, Anna Davis of LCC and Lia Bentzen of West Hills.

Compulsory gymnastics: Some of the county’s top gymnasts square off in the optional, which starts at 3 p.m. Mt. Carmel’s Naomi Tran recorded a 10.0 on the beam on May 3 in a league meet. Other players to watch are Mia Carpenter of Torrey Pines, Mariel Corona of Bonita Vista, Mayuri Ishitsuka of Westview, Jasmine Harris of Del Norte, Georgia Nuzzo of Torrey Pines and Ava Grot from LCC.
