Padangbai, located on Bali’s eastern coast in Indonesia, is a burgeoning hub for tourism. Meanwhile, across the globe, the resort town of Bávaro in the Dominican Republic is already well-known, drawing millions to the Punta Cana area annually. Both places share a vital natural asset: a stunning coral reef, critical for its biodiversity and productivity.

Unfortunately, both areas face challenges such as damage to coral reefs and seagrass beds from boat moorings and improper anchoring, further exacerbated by overfishing and pollution. These actions disrupt the fragile marine balance, contributing to coral reef degradation. Additionally, rising water temperatures lead to coral bleaching, a process that occurs when corals lose the algae that feed them and help them process carbon dioxide, thus also affecting their vibrant colors.

In response, the Dominican Republic’s TUI Care Foundation has teamed up with the Bávaro Reef Ecological Foundation to protect over 560 hectares of marine environments. This effort includes the deployment of buoys, the organization of workshops, and initiatives like coral gardening that educate and involve local workers and fishermen. Their Bávaro Snorkel Lover experience aims to draw 30,000 tourists to engage in activities that promote reef conservation. Further, the program supports local rangers in combating turtle poaching and runs a coral nursery to rejuvenate the sea urchin population.

On the other side of the globe, the TUI Sea the Change Bali initiative, in collaboration with Livingseas Foundation, has made significant strides. From 2021 to 2023, they successfully planted nearly 300 square meters of coral in Padangbai, revitalizing the marine area and training locals in scuba diving and conservation. The project’s next phase will expand this by planting over 2000 square meters of coral and includes building an offshore pontoon for educational visits about marine conservation.

The TUI Care Foundation also celebrates ‘Marine May’, a month dedicated to ocean preservation, highlighting the significance of protecting marine environments through various projects and educational endeavors, ensuring sustainable practices are in place for the future welfare of these communities and ecosystems.
