Citizen volunteers are needed to help restore and protect some of Routt County’s forest lands by helping the local Climate Crew plant tree seedlings on Saturday, Wednesday or Thursday at the site of the Muddy Slide Fire near Lynx Pass in southern Routt County.

Volunteers will work with U.S. Forest Service personnel to replant approximately six acres of burned area at the fire site. Volunteers can help one, two or three days from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

In 2021, the Muddy Slide Fire burned more than 4,000 acres during a three-month period. Reforestation after a wildfire is the first step in creating more resilient forests that will continue to sequester carbon and provide healthy watersheds. 

The group will meet at the Forest Service office in south Steamboat Springs at 8 a.m. and then will carpool to the work site. Volunteers should sign up in advance at YVSC.org/volunteer-opportunities.
