Mitchell leads 1A golf team standings after first day; CTK's Colin Ferrick tops leaderboard
Christ the King junior Colin Ferrick shot an even par 71 in the first round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1A boys golf state championship on Monday, and that was good enough to give him the lead going into day two.
Ferrick recorded three birdies at 7 Lakes Golf Club, one on the front nine and two on the back nine. However, two bogies on the front nine and a bogey on the 18th hole, a 407-yard par 4, kept Ferrick from scoring under par for the day.
The even par performance put Ferrick one stroke ahead of Connor Warren, a senior at Mitchell who won the 1A state championship last season by 14 strokes.
On Monday, Warren was 1-over with a score of 72. He had a rough start on the front nine with three bogies, but found his groove on the ninth hole. Warren birdied the 417-yard par 4, kicking off a string of three straight birdies. He also birdied the 11th hole, which is the second longest hole on the course at 531 yards.
Warren finished the day with four birdies and five bogies, but was 1-under par on the back nine.
Sawyer Slate of South Stokes, a sophomore, finished the day third with a score of 74, putting him 3-over. Six golfers are tied for fourth place at 4-over.
Mitchell is one step closer to repeating as the 1A boys golf state champion in the team race, thanks in large part to Warren's performance. The Mountaineers finished the day with a combined score of 315, which is 31-over.
Warren led the way for Mitchell, but Brody Miller and Bryce Miller are tied for 16th with scores of 79.
Mount Airy can still catch Mitchell though. The Granite Bears are in second place in the team standings after posting a combined score of 323, which is just eight strokes behind the Mountaineers. Mount Airy was led by Shockley Hiatt's 76, which put him in 10th place.
Mountain Island Charter is in third place with a score of 329, followed by Cherryville and Cornerstone Charter which are tied for fourth at 335.
Day two of the 1A boys golf state championship will take place on Tuesday.
