Three million plastic drinks bottles and cans were popped, dropped, pushed and slipped into Deposit Return Scheme machines last Sunday – and the operators of the scheme are ecstatic.

So they should be. The scheme has had a bit of rocky start and badly needs people to start treating it like a normal part of the weekly shop or daily walk or occasional extra chore.
