More than half of Americans support the reduction or elimination of short-haul flights in areas where high-speed rail alternatives exist, reveals a global survey commissioned by Hitachi Rail. These findings, announced as Hitachi Rail participates in the annual High-Speed Rail conference in Washington, D.C., underscore a growing preference for long-distance rail travel over flying or driving.
Conducted by SavantaComres, the research gathered insights from 12,000 individuals across 12 cities worldwide, including Berlin, Copenhagen, Dubai, London, Milan, Paris, San Francisco, Singapore, Sydney, Toronto, Warsaw, and Washington, D.C. Specifically, data from 1,000 respondents in Washington, D.C., and 1,000 in San Francisco provides a statistically sound perspective on citizens’ attitudes toward long-distance travel.
Despite limited access to high-speed rail in the US, survey respondents express a clear desire for expanded options. Over 54% indicate support for reducing or eliminating short-haul flights if high-speed rail alternatives were available, with nearly half endorsing increased air taxes to finance rail infrastructure.
While high-speed rail has revolutionized travel in parts of Asia and Europe, its potential remains largely untapped in America. Nevertheless, there’s a growing recognition of its benefits, evident in the annual U.S. High-Speed Rail Conference, which serves as a platform for industry, political, and business leaders to explore opportunities for scaling up high-speed rail nationwide.
This enthusiasm for high-speed rail is corroborated by the survey data, with one in five American respondents anticipating increased train travel over the next five years. Of note to policymakers and planners, the research identifies comfort (69%), convenience (62%), and cost (57%) as the primary factors influencing transportation choices, outweighing the duration of the journey.
Joseph Pozza, President of Hitachi Rail, North America, said: “We know that high-speed rail can transform how people travel, creating a modal shift away from higher-pollution transit options such as planes and cars and onto sustainable trains. This is evident in the high-speed rail lines Hitachi Rail operates across the globe.
“Our research underlines that there is growing public support for high-speed rail in America, with over half even prepared to support a reduction on short haul flights where rail alternatives exist. As an industry, we should take heed of this public appetite and work together to make it a reality.”
