Ha-Seong Kim thought the worst when he was hit by a pitch on Sunday on his left wrist.

Based on the sight of his starting shortstop writing in pain outside the batter’s box, Padres manager Mike Shildt did, too.

But some 24 hours later, Kim is back in the Padres’ lineup to start a three-game series against the Colorado Rockies. X-rays taken Sunday were negative, so the team was taking a wait-and-see approach to his availability and everyone liked what was seen as Kim checked in with trainers Monday afternoon.

“He’s sore,” Shildt said. “He’s in there. Now if he moves around and doesn’t feel like he can go, then we may do something different. But he showed up sore but able.”

Kim was managing swelling with a compression sleeve as he left the clubhouse Sunday afternoon. He’d already begun regaining feeling while running the bases, prior to the Padres replacing him in the field with Tyler Wade. On Monday, he’d swapped the sleeve for a simple wrap around his left wrist while progressing through early work on the bases and at shortstop and batting practice on the field.

“Medically he can play,” Shildt said, “So (playing) is based on a tolerance thing. “We know it’s not going to get worse. Clearly he can get hit again, but that’s part of it. But it’s more about, it’s not going to get worse if you play. And now it’s a matter of your functionality and your experience if you play or not.”

Kim will bat ninth in Monday’s lineup, the fourth time he’s been at the bottom of the lineup in the last five games.

While Kim has five homers in 43 games played, he’s hitting just .208/.316/.362 on the season and even worse in May (.182/.290/.273).

Manny Machado is also in the field a second straight game at third base, meaning Luis Arraez is serving as the designated hitter as all the regulars are in the starting lineup.

Here is the Rockies’ lineup:

Monday’s pitching matchup

Rockies RHP Dakota Hudson (0-6, 6.35 ERA)

His six losses are tied for the MLB lead, as he’s walked (22) more than he’s struck out (20) in his first 34 outings outside the Cardinals organization. The Padres touched Hudson for six runs on six hits and four walks in 3 ⅓ innings last month at Coors Field, although the Rockies came from behind to steal a win against the Padres’ bullpen.

Padres RHP Randy Vásquez (0-1, 4.50 ERA)

He’s making his second start in place of the injured Joe Musgrove (triceps). Vásquez struck out six over 4⅓ innings at Wrigley Field last week, but he allowed four runs in 2⅔ innings at the Rockies in a previous stint in the rotation. Through 12 innings this year, Vásquez has struck out 11 and walked three.
