A house fire spread into brush near Loveland Reservoir near Alpine on Monday afternoon, burning 16 acres before crews could cap its progress, a Cal Fire official said.

The fire was 85 percent contained by Tuesday morning, with full containment expected by mid-afternoon.

The blaze was first reported around 1:45 p.m. near Loveland Lane and Montiel Truck Trail, fire officials said. Cal Fire Capt. Brent Pascua said the home caught fire “and it got into the vegetation and ran up the hill behind the home.”

The initial group of firefighters at the scene said the blaze was spreading at a moderate rate of speed, according to Pascua.

Pascua said some outbuildings and other homes in the area were originally threatened, but no evacuations were ordered.

Around 3:30 p.m., ground crews and personnel aboard air tankers and water-dropping helicopters had contained the fire, Pascua said.

Firefighters planned to remain in the area overnight, dousing any and all remaining hot spots, according to Cal Fire.

Pascua said the home was a total loss, and Red Cross was called out to assist a resident displaced by the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
