WINTER PARK, Fla. — Winter Park High School’s boys’ volleyball is the fifth ranked high school team in the country. The team is carrying an undefeated record into the playoff, heading to the regional finals on Monday. Their leading scorer is Tristan Guitton who stands above the rest at 6 foot, 6 inches.
"Our teams are amazing. Everyone's been putting in effort," said the Winter Park High School junior. "Everyone's been working hard together. We have good practices, everyone's bought in and we work together as a team. We have no issues we get along and just brought us to where we are: undefeated so far. Hoping to bring home a ring."
Guitton has been doing everything for the Wildcats, leading his team in scoring, kills and blocks.
"I started my freshman year when Coach Tom actually gave me a call and said, 'You're tall. It could be good. You should come out to tryouts.' So I did it, and then I started playing club, and my coach, Jordan, really gave me a passion for the game," said Guitton. "And now it's just been my thing ever since."
When he began the sport at the beginning of high school, he was not exactly 6 foot, 6 inches tall just yet, but his height even then was a convincing enough reason to take on a new sport.
"I was like 6, 3 and I'm like 6, 6 now," said Guitton.
He’ll be the first to admit, he has grown physically, yes, but in the game as well, since his freshman year.
"It's night and day. I mean, I was probably one of the worst players on our JV team when I started. Now I'm out here. I'm one of our leading scorers, so hoping to go out another state championship," said Guitton.
Now with the Wildcats has an upper classman on the team, he’s a key part of the team’s success.
"I do my best to be a leader," said Guitton. "I try and be vocal at practice and keep everyone's head up and just keep our game moving smoothly. I try and get people hyped, just get going and have a good time on the court.
Still a junior though, with goals to finish strong this season, Guitton also has goals that will extend beyond his time in high school.
"As far as after this, all I know is I want to play at the next level," said Guitton. "I have a few different opportunities that have come up, but we're going to have to wait and see. Hopefully it'll be figured out pretty soon, though."
