Lightning in the early morning signaled that Sunday would be one more wet day in the D.C. area, another in the series of days of many clouds and frequent raindrops.

The lightning flashed outside windows in the dark and silent minutes after midnight Sunday morning, presumably surprising residents intent on indoor pursuits. It came also as an assertive prelude to the .40 inches of rain measured in Washington by 5 p.m. Sunday.
