A Stephensville man now faces a second-degree murder charge after a man injured in a fight died of his injuries.

Chad Gros, 49, Stephensville, was originally booked on a second-degree battery charge after what the St. Martin Parish Sheriff's Office described as a May 4 altercation at a business in the 3100 block of La. 70 in Stephensville.

The victim was taken to an area hospital, and a battery warrant was issued for Gros.

Gros turned himself in at the St. Martin Parish Sheriff's Office on Thursday morning. That afternoon, the victim died of his injuries, the Sheriff's Office said.

The charge was upgraded to second-degree murder, and Gros was booked again at the St. Martin Parish Correctional Center.

In Louisiana, second-degree murder carries a mandatory sentence of life without parole.
