SDSU earns spot in NCAA softball tournament, will play Virginia Tech Friday in LA

Los Angeles Regional features 3 participants from last year’s playoff bracket, which SDSU won
The Mountain West champion San Diego State softball team has earned an automatic bid to this year’s NCAA Tournament.
The Aztecs won’t have to travel far: they’ll face 15th-ranked Virginia Tech on Friday afternoon as part of the Los Angeles Regional.
SDSU (31-18) will play the Hokies (39-12-1) at 3 p.m. PT. The double-elimination tournament also includes No. 6 UCLA (37-10) and Grand Canyon (48-11). The SDSU-Virginia Tech game will air on ESPNU.
SDSU, UCLA and GCU were all part of the Los Angeles Regional a year ago. It was the Aztecs who advanced, advancing to the Salt Lake City Super Regional. SDSU beat GCU 6-0 in the winners’ bracket.
The Aztecs are playing in Los Angeles for the sixth time in 14 NCAA Tournament appearances. San Diego State’s coach, Stacey Nuveman Deniz, is a former Bruins standout.
The regional winners will advance to the Super Regionals. The eight Super Regional winners advance to the Women’s College World Series, which begins May 30 in Oklahoma City.
