“Two families gotta grieve on a holiday. That's bad. Two mamas have lost their children.”Just after 5 a.m. at "The Hot Spot" on Evangeline Avenue, about a mile away from Iroquois Park, four people were shot — two of them dying from their injuries. When police arrived on the scene this morning, they found three victims: two men and a woman who had been shot. Police said another man who'd been shot on Evangeline showed up at the hospital. One of the men died at the scene, another at the hospital. Neighbors nearby said this isn’t normal for this area. “People can't really go out and have a good time without any type of violence,” said Jalan Morgan, “I was kind of shocked because it's like I didn't hear anything until I looked on Facebook this morning. I'm like, 'Wow, that happened?' And I was up this morning. So it's like. To hear anything about that is like it was just shocking. It was shocking.” The shock was also felt in Lyndon. Just 12 hours later a 31-year-old man died after his car was riddled with bullets at the Devonshire Apartments. Another family is left to grieve and a community is left to question their safety. “To add to the fact that it was in broad daylight like are you serious? In this type of neighborhood too,” said Kyndra Cooksey. Just a few hours later, police responded to another homicide after a man was found dead along railroad tracks. With the homicide numbers continuing to rise, neighbors say something has to change. “The city really needs to change. You’re right. We’re in May and this happens every other day. People are losing another family member. Another friend, all young and it’s like seriously when is it going to stop?” said Cooksey. LMPD's Homicide Unit is investigating each shooting. Anyone with information is asked to call the anonymous Crime Tip Hotline at 502-574-LMPD (5673) or use the online LMPD Crime Tip Portal.
