Police said they were called out to Crawford Avenue just before 11 p.m. Friday on reports of a man armed with a knife.
When they got there, LMPD said the man refused commands to put the knife down.
They said he then went towards the officers, and they tried to subdue him with “less-lethal options.”
They said none of those worked to stop him, and they then fired shots at him. He was struck.
“After discharging their firearms, the suspect continued to hold officers at bay with the knife, thus preventing them from performing immediate, life-saving measures,” said an LMPD spokesperson. “Ultimately, our officers were able to disarm the suspect, and perform life-saving measures on him.”
Police said he was still alert and conscious when he was taken to the hospital, said police.
Sunday morning, they announced he had died.
LMPD’s Public Integrity Unit is continuing its investigation into this incident.
It is LMPD's policy to release body camera footage within 10 business days.
