SHP says armed suspect shot after Trooper chase

A State Highway Patrol trooper was involved in a shooting with a fleeing suspect Saturday morning.

According to the SHP, a trooper conducting speed enforcement on I-587 near the Wilson and Greene County line clocked a burgundy Kia Carnival traveling eastbound at 90 mph in a 70 mph zone.

The trooper started a pursuit after the driver, Kenneth Charles Kinard, 35, failed to stop.

The chase continued east on I-587 before Kinard exited onto US-258 and headed south toward Farmville.

The chase ended at the US-258 and Bynum Drive intersection, where Kinard abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.

A foot chase took place through a neighborhood and into an open field.

Kinard reportedly turned and pointed a handgun at the pursuing trooper, who then fired back, hitting the suspect multiple times in the leg.

Kinard received medical attention at ECU Vidant Hospital.

The trooper was not injured.

The suspect had multiple warrants for his arrest from the state of Virginia to include:

  • Contempt of court (FTA) for probation violation.
  • Possession of schedule I & II drugs.
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia.
  • 3 counts of felony grand larceny.

A firearm, illegal drugs, and drug paraphernalia were recovered from the scene.

Charges against Kinard are pending.

The SHP trooper involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative duty as per protocol.
