United Nations: The UN General Assembly (UNGA) Friday May 10, 2024 passed with an overwhelming majority a resolution to expand Palestine’s “rights and privileges” at UN with an appeal to UNSC to admit Palestine as a full member of the world body.
Palestine current status at the United Nations since 2012 is of non-member observer state which allows some rights short of a full member.
Friday's UN resolution confers additional rights on Palestine at the world body, allowing it to be seated among Member States in alphabetical order, take part fully in debates, make statements on behalf of a group, propose agenda items and have its representatives elected to committees.
"None of the upgrades in status will take effect until the new session of the Assembly opens on 10 September", the UN said.
The resolution which called to expand Palestine’s “rights and privileges” at the UN passed with 143 countries voting in favour, 09 voting against, and 25 abstentions.
The UN General Assembly in its resolution passed Friday also urged the UN Security Council (UNSC) to give "favourable consideration" to Palestine's request for full membership.
Granting Palestinian membership requires a recommendation from the Security Council.
India is one of the 143 countries who said yes to UN General Assembly vote today.
United States, which is likely to veto the resolution when it comes to UNSC voted against the UN General Assembly Palestine vote.
Argentina, Czechia, Hungary, Israel, Micronesia, Nauru and Palau are the 9 countries besides the United States that votes against the UNGA resolution.
Israel’s ambassador denounces the UN for “welcoming a terror state into its ranks”.
"The United Nations was founded with the mission of ensuring such tyranny (Nazis) never raises its ugly head again. Today, you are about to do the exact opposite and advance the establishment of a Palestinian terror state, which will be led by the Hitler of our times", Israel’s ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan said after the vote.
"Today, with sick and twisted irony, the very body established to prevent evil is now welcoming a terror state into its ranks", he added.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas welcome the UNGA vote. He said Palestine will continue to push for full membership at the UN after today’s General Assembly vote.
He said the resolution’s passage showed that the world stands with the rights and freedom of the Palestinian people, and against Israel’s occupation.
The UNGA resolution Friday comes amid the deadly war Israel has launched on the Palestinians since Oct 7, 2023.
More than 34,000 civilians have been killed in the Israeli bombing and close to 1.4 million Palestinians are starving due to the Zionist blockade of the Gaza Strip.
