Transport for London (TfL) has announced a significant enhancement in the frequency of the Woolwich Ferry services during weekends, with the implementation of a two-vessel operation system. This change ensures that ferries now depart every fifteen minutes throughout the week, aiming to attract more visitors and streamline travel for daily commuters.
The introduction of the two-vessel service is expected to considerably reduce waiting times and provide more reliable connections with other parts of London’s extensive transport network. TfL has also rolled out a new timetable for the Woolwich Ferry, which includes extended operating hours. Services are now available from 5 am to 9 pm from Monday to Sunday, maintaining a consistent fifteen-minute frequency. This enhancement is seen as a move to facilitate smoother and more efficient travel options for both residents and tourists.
Strategically located near other major transport modes, including the Elizabeth Line and the new SL2 Superloop route, the Woolwich Ferry offers an indispensable link between Woolwich and North Woolwich. The SL2 route, which commenced in March 2024, provides an express service from Walthamstow Central to North Woolwich, connecting major hubs like Gants Hill, Ilford, and Barking. This integration with Tube and rail services is poised to enhance visitor access to various attractions and business centers across the capital.
Darren Ellis, the General Manager of the Woolwich Ferry, expressed enthusiasm about the new and improved ferry timetable. He highlighted the benefits of more frequent journeys and longer operating hours for passengers, emphasizing the importance of the ferry service to the local community. The ongoing efforts to enhance the ferry’s service and reliability reflect TfL and the Mayor of London’s commitment to improving the capital’s river services as part of a broader strategy to develop a more efficient and accessible London.
By doubling the frequency of the Woolwich Ferry services and extending operating hours, TfL is not only enhancing the daily commute but also encouraging an influx of tourists by offering convenient and reliable transportation options that connect key areas of the city. This strategic improvement is expected to significantly contribute to the growth of local tourism and the overall user experience.
