Stay cool the easy way.

By

You’re cruising along in early May, donning a lightweight sweater each morning, and then, bam, out of nowhere it’s 80 degrees. Summer hits hard, and without an air conditioner, places like your bed and your sofa can become heat-trapping hellscapes. If a window AC unit isn’t an option or you need something with a bit more power, a portable air conditioner is your answer.

Portable air conditioners aren’t cheap, as we know. That’s why, from the basic ACs that get the job done to the smartest devices you can buy, we searched far and wide to get our hands on the best around. On paper, if it’s keeping you cool, staying quiet, and not making you take out a second mortgage to pay your electricity bill, we’re loving it. But it’s harder to check all those boxes than you may think.

We spent personal money on portable units that didn't fill the room the way they should and others that were straight-up deafening. Now you’ll never ever have to do the same. These are the best portable ACs we found to make it through the summer.

Best Overall Portable Air Conditioner

Midea Duo

Duo
$650 at Amazon$650 at Walmart
Pros
  • Hose-in-hose design
  • An excellent dehumidifer
  • App reminds you to clean filters
  • Quiet as a mouse
Cons
  • Heavy
  • Window attachment is wonky

If you want the ultimate climate-control device for your home, look no further than the Midea Duo. Not only will this portable AC unit cool a room down quickly, but it also does dehumidification and heating, so you’ll have a use for it all year round. The best part is it’s one of the quietest portable units we tried. We love that aspect, but if you need an AC to double as a white-noise machine, you may want to look at other options.

What makes the Midea Duo state of the art is its hose-in-hose design. Typically, a dual-hose unit will cool much quicker than a single-hose unit and have a longer life, too. The Duo has all the advantages of a dual-hose setup without the hassle of running two hoses from the unit to your window. Speaking of hassle-free, the setup process shouldn’t take more than ten minutes. It gets even easier once you connect to the Midea air app, which conveniently reminds you to clean your filters periodically—a reminder we dearly needed.

At seventy-seven pounds, the Duo is on the heavier side, so it’s less portable than some others. Plus, if you have sliding windows, it’s tricky to keep the hose securely fastened. The provided sliding window attachment is definitely a bit finicky.

Best Smart Portable Air Conditioner

Whynter ARC-1230WN

ARC-1230WN
Pros
  • Fast, efficient cooling
  • Wi-Fi-enabled
Cons
  • Remote control is spacey
  • Heating model costs extra

Another very strong pick is the Whynter ARC-1230WN. This smart and portable AC unit will significantly cool down any room under six hundred square feet in less than an hour. And its dual-hose system allows the ARC-1230WN to cool a room quickly, quietly, and efficiently. Like the Midea Duo’s, its hoses are interlocked with each other, so you have only one large hose to deal with instead of two smaller ones. That means it can bring a room down from 72 to 69 degrees in what feels like minutes. Very nice.

While setup is easy, the Wi-Fi-enabled remote control that comes with this unit can be unreliable even at seemingly short ranges. Thankfully, the Whynter app makes up for it. We find that our phone is the more convenient option anyway. (We never misplace it under the couch cushions at least.)

Overall, the competition was neck and neck between this and the Duo. But the Whynter ARC-1230WN is a few pounds lighter and therefore the more portable of the two dominant smart air conditioners on the market.

Best Portable Air Conditioner for Large Spaces

Frigidaire FHPW142AC1

FHPW142AC1
Pros
  • Energy efficient
  • Great for living rooms
  • We love the glossy finish
Cons
  • No heater
  • Noisier than expected

Have you tested out other portable units and found your AC doesn’t quite fill the room the way you want it to? Then check out this Frigidaire. It was the best one we tried for open spaces, and it can bring a room down five degrees or more in a couple minutes. It isn’t the most quiet or subtle, but it gets the job done and then some.

If you’re looking to save some money and don’t need all that power, you can opt for similar models with as low as 8000 BTU for less than half the price.

Quietest Portable Air Conditioner

LG DUAL Inverter

DUAL Inverter
Pros
  • Quiet
  • Built-in-hose
Cons
  • Smaller cooling area
  • No heater

This LG portable AC unit is small but mighty—mighty quiet, too. Of all the portable air conditioners we tested, the LG DUAL Inverter Smart AC with Wi-Fi was one of the least noisy due to LG’s trademarked LoDecibel Quiet Operation. It’s also just a damn good portable AC, especially if you are using it in a small, enclosed space like a bedroom. Admittedly, it does suffer in a larger room, particularly one with an exterior door, due to its lower cooling capacity and BTU output.

As occasionally lazy people, we consider one of our favorite little touches—and there are many we love—to be the built-in hose. This unit spares you the hassle that comes with attaching the hose to your portable AC. In fact, if setup is your biggest hurdle, this may just be the unit to get. It’s pretty compact and easy to store—which is vital, because the device does not have a heater and will need to be stored during the winter months.

EcoFlow Wave 2 Portable Air Conditioner

Wave 2 Portable Air Conditioner
Now 23% Off
Pros
  • Bring it anywhere
  • Cools and heats quickly
Cons
  • Pricey
  • Only good for really small spaces

Seriously, this thing has such a small footprint it’s hard not to recommend it based on the power for its size alone. The high-tech air conditioner is tiny at thirty-two pounds, making it the most portable you can get by far. It’s an excellent all-in-one device for all types of traveling and camping. The heating is as fast and effective as the cooling, and both are great for tents, cabins, and small rooms. Even if you’re just bringing it from room to room in a house, that type of portability is feasible with the Wave 2.

Unlike the rest of these portable units, EcoFlow’s uses rechargeable batteries and can truly go anywhere. There are lots of charging options, from AC to solar, and it comes with detachable exhaust ducts you can snap on and off based on your needs. All in all, the Wave 2 is an awesome piece of tech and we can’t wait to travel with it.

Cons
  • Can be loud

This Black + Decker portable model is the quintessential AC unit, for better and worse. If you don’t want another goddamn smart device in your home, this affordable model is the one for you. With just a simple remote control and a single-hose setup, plug this sucker in and you now have a fan, an AC, and a dehumidifier ready to go for the summer.

The unit can be loud, and there’s no app telling you when to clean. (Put that shit in your calendar.) Nothing fancy here—just a product that excels at exactly what it says it does.

Other Portable AC Units We Liked

wayfair

A few air conditioners didn’t quite make the cut yet are still worth mentioning. We liked them, but we didn’t fall in love.

SereneLife SLPAC Portable Air Conditioner: The latest SPLAC14 model of SereneLife’s portable air conditioner is one of the best options for under $500 for 14,000 BTU.

Honeywell 14,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner:
Honeywell is another brand that offers a sleek, powerful portable AC. The sliding window adjuster in this one actually works, too.

How to Choose a Portable Air Conditioner

shape, rectangle

When choosing a portable air conditioner, you have to look at a few things. The first is use case. You’ve already determined you need a portable unit as opposed to a window unit, but why is that? Are you trying to take it with you or is it meant for one room in particular? By answering these questions, you’ll figure out where your focus should be in regard to the following categories.

BTU: British Thermal Units (BTUs) are a measure of how much energy an AC is using—basically how powerful it is. On average, it must have 20 BTUs for each square foot of space a unit is cooling in order to work properly. You can multiply the amount of space you need by this number to roughly determine how powerful of an air conditioner you require. The current high end of portable units is 14,000 BTU, which many of these selections hit.

Decibel Level: A disadvantage of portable AC units is that they can often be loud. Like jet-engine-in-your-backyard loud. This is why noise level is something we paid careful attention to while choosing which portable units to recommend. The closer a decibel number is to zero, the closer it is to complete silence. While absolute zero is out of the question, we loved the LG portable air conditioner for its lower decibel levels, which clocked in at just under 50.

Mobility: The upside of a portable air conditioner is that it’s mobile. Unfortunately, many on the market are not. The conceit of air conditioning makes it difficult for one to work when it’s not hooked up to a window. If you need to move your AC from room to room on a daily basis, the hose-in-hose design of the Whynter and the Midea makes them easy to move. But if you need something truly portable, go with the EcoFlow Wave 2 and never look back.

Frequently Asked Questions

shape, rectangle

Why get a portable air conditioner?

If you live in a home where window units aren’t feasible, you don’t have central air, and it still gets hot and humid in the summer, you might need a portable AC. It can hook up to pretty much any window, and you can even move it between rooms at your leisure.

How do portable ACs compare with window units?

Window AC units can admittedly often be better at cooling a room in a power-efficient manner. It’s true your energy bill may likely be higher when using a portable unit—at least this has been the case for us in the past. But what the portable variety offers is flexibility and portability. It can also be quite fast and furious. Where a window unit can maintain a temperature all day, it can take a while to cool down a room. The top end of the portable kind focuses on quickly removing all heat from a room to reach your desired temperature as fast as possible.
