    What's the story

A suspected chemical leak at Bobby Duke Middle School in Coachella, California, resulted in the hospitalization of 18 students on Wednesday morning. The situation triggered a significant response, with multiple emergency vehicles rushing to the school as authorities attempted to identify the source of an unidentified "chemical" smell. According to California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE)'s update, 24 classrooms have been isolated.

The exact cause of the illnesses and the source of the "chemical" smell remained uncertain initially, but it was suspected to be related to gas. Despite a comprehensive search by a hazardous materials team, no leaks were found. "The hazardous materials team made entry and was unable to detect any leaks," CAL FIRE stated. The investigation was then passed on to Southwest Gas Company for further examination. Before CAL FIRE's arrival, school officials had reportedly shut off the gas supply.

In another update, CAL FIRE reported that "19 juveniles were evaluated at the scene and 18 were transported to local area hospitals with minor complaints." One school staff member was also hospitalized but all affected individuals are now reported to be in good health. In 2017, a similar gas leak had also forced the entire school building to be evacuated. However, both the fire department and Southern California Gas Company found no evidence of leaks or chemical spills.
