Kuldeep is the new batter and he can hit the ball. He does too. Sandeep goes a bit wide of off and Kuldeep moves ahead a bit, makes space and smacks it to the square boundary. Ashwin is annoyed that this wasn’t stopped by the fielder who came running in. Kuldeep then lunges to make something of a very low full toss. Hits it with the wrong side of the bat and it goes just short of Chahal at short third. Just a single. Rasikh Dar Salam also manages a single off the last ball. Tries to run the second, but he’s so far away when Sanju Samson collects the ball and whacks the stumps. The DC innings winds up for 221/8. A good recovery this by the home side. 

21 runs came off the previous over. Boult comes now for his final over. Gulbadin negotiates a yorker to run a single. Stubbs on strike, just what DC wants and he has time to find the gap and send the ball to the square leg fence for FOUR. Boult recovers with a yorker. You could hear the thud into the shoe, looks for a leg stump line here. Just a single. Gulbadin on strike, tries to slice the ball but holes out to Ashwin at short third. Soft.

Rasikh Dar Salam is the new batter. Abhishek Porel makes way for the man. He is DC’s impact sub. And he scoops Boult over the keeper’s head for FOUR off his very first ball. Had ample time to find the best way to scoop it. Doing Dilshan proud here, is the J&K youngster. He tries again and does it AGAIN! The dugout is ecstatic and Ricky Ponting gives his colleagues an all-knowing wink. The coach knew! DC into the 200s. 

Chahal to bowl out. DC run rate now 9.88. Gulbadin finds the boundary and a relieving one for the Capitals. He drags the ball from outside off and swats it to the midwicket ropes and beats a diving Parag for FOUR. He then thumps Chahal to long off but Rovman Powell stops the ball from going past the ropes, just a single. Stubbs looks at the field, sees the fielders in the circle and reverse sweeps to the fence for four. No protection on the off side at all. FOUR. Chahal tried to bowl into the leg stump, good anticipation from the South African. Oh YET AGAIN! Stubbs neutralises the field yet again., this time, paddle sweeping to the square leg boundary for FOUR. Incredible reading of the field this. He will finish with a SIX and it’s a gorgeous shot sent over deep backward square. Expensive from Chahal and this will bring DC’s surge towards a big total back on track. 

Sandeep Sharma returns for his third. 

In the last 19 balls, DC has managed just 19 runs and lost a wicket. Rajasthan has been pretty good in the death overs with 19 wickets in 11 games at an economy of 9.84. They’ll want to bank on that form here as they try and contain this DC score. Sandeep mixes up his lengths and pace to fox Stubbs and Gulbadin. His slow bouncer to Gulbadin that left the Afghan puzzled on why he couldn’t connect is a thing of beauty. Just three singles so far. Sandeep then targets the toes and Gulbadin can only manage a single. Fantastic over from the RR pacer. 

Chahal returns for his third. Gulbadin welcomes him with a massive SIX. Not too much distance, but just enough for the most runs he can score off a delivery.. Wasn’t quite the length he would have wanted to bowl here. Goes straight down the ground, the Afghan. He then takes a single. Stubbs takes his time to try and read the leggie. Chahal changes his length, bowls to the stumps with a few deviations, trying to temp the batter to try something. After the six, nicely pegs things back. Eight runs come off the over. 

Ravichandran Ashwin to bowl out. Ashwin sticks to a fuller length, not allowing too much room and keeping a check on the runs. The pair - Gulbadin and Stubbs - are happy to rotate strike. Sanju is happy with what his bowler is giving him - ‘Vera level, vera level’ he screams from behind the stumps. Just the five runs from the over. Ashwin finishes for the day with figures of 3/24 from his 4 overs. Incredible effort.

Chahal to bowl his second. Delhi Capitals bring up the team 150. Stubbs and Pant play it safe with the leggie, dealing in singles. But Pant then moves into the off stump line and tries to swat the ball on the legside, but is caught by Trent Boult at fine leg. Pant’s leg spin weakness endures. 350th T20 wicket for Yuzvendra Chahal.

Ashwin returns. Porel begins with a single through short third. Pant tries to slog sweep Ashwin, but has copped the ball on himself. Appeal follows but Ashwin himself wasn’t too convinced, perhaps wondering if it was going down leg. No reviews, RR and DC get on with it. Pant runs a single. Porel on strike,. OH AND GONE! Ashwin opts for a slower ball, trying to draw a shot from Porel with that outside off line. Porel holes out to Sandeep Sharma at point and a remarkable innings comes to an end. Tristan Stubbs is the new batter. Four runs come off the over, plus that important wicket.

Boult returns. Starts with a pace variation to Porel. He’s pulled it to midwicket for a single. Pant pulls out a version of the helicopter shot but will get just a single. Boult goes slow into the pitch with a short ball and Porel has sent that flying through deep midwicket for FOUR. A length ball is then thumped to midwicket for a single. Now Rishabh Pant sends the Boult short ball to the ropes, a hook over fine leg. Gorgeous shot this. Boult ends the over with a dot, beating Pant with a fuller delivery going into the channel. An expensive over for Sanju’s RR, not ideal when they want wickets. 

Avesh Khan returns to the attack. SIX! Porel gets to his half-century in style after pulling the short ball over mid-wicket for a maximum. FOUR! Full toss from Avesh and Porel slams it over extra cover. 14 from this over. 

Samson is rotating his spinners well as Ashwin comes in place of Chahal now. Ashwin to Axar, OUT! Similar attempt from Axar trying to hit it over a straight boundary but this time he did not get the elevation and holes out to Riyan Parag at long-off. Skipper Rishabh Pant walks out at no. five. Yuzvendra Chahal from the other end. SIX! Porel welcomes Chahal in style. Flight ball on off and Porel steps out to hit it over deep mid-wicket. 12 off Chahal’s first over after Boult fails to stop Porel’s sweep going for a FOUR in the last delivery. 

Riyan Parag replaces Ashwin. Parag to Porel, FOUR! Porel brings out his slog sweep but gets an outside edge, nonetheless, the ball travels to the fence for a boundary. Still only six runs from this over. 

Sandeep Sharma comes back into the attack. Sandeep to Porel, RUN OUT! Shai Hope is unluckier than JFM it seems. He leaves the crease before Porel’s straight hit gets a deflection from Sandeep which dislodges bails in the non-striker’s end. Wow, this is crazy. Axar Patel comes in at no. four ahead of Pant and Stubbs and gets off the mark with a FOUR. 10 off the over as DC scores 78 from the first PowerPlay.

Porel rocks back and pulls it over mid-wicket for a maximum. 9 and a wicket off this over.

Trent Boult to JFM, an inswinging delivery from around the wicket and McGurk flicks it for a double. Boult beats JFM in the next two deliveries before the batter misses to find a connection as he has been hit on the box. McGurk is writhing in pain and needs medical attention. DC began the season on the wrong foot, losing four of its first five games. But the Rishabh Pant-led side soon clicked into gear, winning four of its next matches to put itself in contention for a playoff spot.

But a heavy defeat against Kolkata Knights Riders in its last game has put DC back on its haunches, with its top-four chances now hinging on other results.

For Royals, the plot has been far more buoyant. Sanju Samson’s men have been on a roll, sitting second in the table with eight wins out of ten matches. A win against DC will help it get back on top of the standings, displacing Kolkata Knight Riders.
