Louisville Metro Police Department is investigating a deadly shooting in the Russell neighborhood.
Officers say they were called near the 2500 block of West Chestnut just before midnight on Sunday. A man had been shot and died at the scene. Neighbors say they’re shaken by the violence.
“Any time a loss of life is taken, it is sad. That means that somebody's family is grieving,” said Kurtariq Muhammad.
Dr. Eddie Woods is the CEO of No More Red Dots Inc. Their organization works to intervene and de-escalate violence before and after a shooting. They also provide support for victims' families.
He says while law enforcement continues to investigate, he hopes the community can become more involved in making their neighborhoods safer.
“We've got to train communities on how to do for themselves a little bit and how to make their neighborhoods not as favorable for shootings to happen in the first place,” Woods said.
According to the Louisville Metro Gun Violence Dashboard, there have been at least 120 non-fatal shootings and 56 homicides in the metro this year.
Woods says preventing gun violence must be an ongoing effort that requires continuous investment and collaboration from leaders and neighbors.
“Everybody has got to do something. We've got to start treating it like we did with cancer, like we did with smoking. Once everybody got behind it, we made some progress, we made some moves, but until we do that, we're just spinning our wheels,” Woods said.
LMPD's Homicide Unit is investigating, and there are no known suspects at this time.
