As the trend of slow travel gains popularity, digital travel platform Agoda highlights top Asian destinations ideal for extended stays. Leading the pack for the longest average visit duration is Thailand’s Khao Lak.
Over the last five years, interest in slow travel has tripled, as evidenced by Google Trends data*. This travel style promotes longer stays to foster deeper connections with local cultures and communities, enriching the travel experience.
In eight key Asian markets, destinations noted for the longest stays include Khao Lak, Thailand; Seoul, South Korea; Perhentian Islands, Malaysia; Tokyo, Japan; Siargao Island, Philippines; Pekanbaru, Indonesia; Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam; and Ahmedabad, India. These findings are based on Agoda’s booking data from the first quarter of 2024.
In India, Ahmedabad sees the longest average stays, followed by Goa and Faizabad. Internationally, Indian travelers spend the most time in Seoul, seeking immersive experiences.
Krishna Rathi, Senior Country Director India Subcontinent and Maldives at Agoda shared, “It’s easy to understand why slow travel is one of the most fascinating travel trends right now. In today’s fast-paced world, many travelers will recognize the desire to use their holiday to disconnect from day-to-day life and form a deeper connection with the people and places they visit. It’s something we love to see and encourage at Agoda, as we are passionate about bridging the world through travel. For travelers looking to fully submerge in a holiday destination, whether it’s lazing around in a beach villa or settling in a chic city hotel, the destinations on our slow travel ranking are great places to start.”
While some destinations are popular for quick city breaks, all locations on the slow travel list, whether urban or rural, are worthy of prolonged visits. Travelers can engage deeply with local cultures through activities like snorkeling in Perhentian Islands or savoring street food in Ho Chi Minh City.
