It was late November last year when the inspectors made an unannounced visit to an overcrowded University Hospital Limerick (UHL), which, regardless of the season, is in the grip of an eternal winter.

The behind-the-scenes spot-check on the struggling hospital is the nearest we have come to finding out how it is performing, just a week after the harrowing inquest into the death of Aoife Johnston in ­December 2022.
