The 2024 Chevy Traverse wears a crisply ironed exterior and loads up on tech, while it downsizes to a turbo-4.
What kind of vehicle is the 2024 Chevrolet Traverse? What does it compare to?
The redesigned 2024 Chevrolet Traverse is a three-row crossover SUV sized like the Kia Telluride, Honda Pilot, and Toyota Grand Highlander.
Is the 2024 Chevrolet Traverse a good SUV?
It looks good, rides well, and gets a slight boost in fuel economy. We give it a TCC Rating of 6.4 out of 10, before safety scores have settled in. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
What's new for the 2024 Chevrolet Traverse?
Much is new for the redesigned Traverse, ranging from standout styling to a new turbo-4 engine. On the exterior, a more trucklike visage gets even more blocky on the Z71, which has a distinct grille, red tow hooks, and a skid plate. There’s more sculpting down the sides, and the taillights wrap around the rear end like LED sunglasses. Inside, a new 17.7-inch touchscreen takes over the dash, and sits atop a bank of thin climate controls and vents, ahead of a wide center console with cupholders and wireless smartphone charging. Plainer base editions get ramped up in RS trim with available red-and-black panels that look like carbon fiber.
A new 328-hp turbo-4 takes over for a 310-hp V-6 in the latest Traverse, and power and tow ratings have remained mostly stable. The turbo-4 takes a while to wind up to its torque peak, while the companion 8-speed automatic keeps its shifts mostly smooth and quiet. The front-drive Traverse can be fitted with all-wheel drive; on the Z71, which has more ride height and a towing package, there’s also a more sophisticated AWD setup with a twin-clutch rear axle for more precise power delivery. All Traverses drive with an isolated but not lumbering feel; ride compliance is best with the smaller wheels, while the 22-inchers on the RS flatten the ground and stiffen the ride considerably.
Interior space hasn’t changed much in this heavy refresh, but seating quality has made gains, and the Traverse can fit up to eight passengers comfortably. About 23 cubic feet of cargo sit behind the third row seat—the tightest of all for adults, of course—and in all the Traverse can tote up to 97.6 cubic feet of stuff behind the front seats, though the cargo floor won’t be flat or gap-free.
All models now get automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, active lane control, and automatic high-beam headlights, as well as blind-spot monitors. A surround-view camera system and GM’s excellent Super Cruise hands-free highway driving system can be fitted.
How much does the 2024 Chevrolet Traverse cost?
It’s $38,995 for a 2024 Traverse LS with seating for eight, a 17.7-inch touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, digital gauges, remote start, 18-inch wheels, and cloth heated front seats—and $2,000 for all-wheel drive. Check out the $41,395 Traverse LT and its wireless smartphone charging, power tailgate, and sliding second-row seat for better value. The $55,595 Traverse RS piles on 22-inch all-season tires, power-folding third-row seats, perforated leather upholstery, a panoramic roof, and Bose audio.
Where is the 2024 Chevrolet Traverse made?
In Lansing, Michigan.
2024 Chevrolet Traverse Styling
The Traverse has sharpened its stance.
With a point each for a crisped-up exterior and a tech-dressed interior, the Traverse checks in at a 7 for styling.
Is the Chevrolet Traverse a good-looking car?
Yes. It’s been heavily restyled to blend in better with the Chevrolet family of pickup trucks and full-size SUVs. Nowhere does that show up more clearly than in the off-road Z71 trim. New to Traverse, it accentuates the SUV’s truck-like stance, with its vertical, broad grille cinched by a belt holding the Chevy bowtie and crowned by slim LED running lights under a pronounced hood. Headlights and available fog lights sit below the bowtie belt, and down low a lower grille stretches over an air dam. The Z71 stamps its unique lower grille with red recovery hooks, an aluminum skid plate, and a better approach angle.
Down the sides, bulging fenders and sculpted rocker panels add more visual interest than the plain sides of its predecessor, but the rear end of the greenhouse marks the clearest distinction for the 2024 model. Instead of body-color C-pillars, the rear quarter windows flare out behind the rear doors and wrap around the rear end, as if it’s wearing big performance sunglasses in reverse. RS trims black out 22-inch wheels and other trim elements, while Z71 trims wrap all-terrain tires around 18-inch wheels. The Z71 has one inch more of ground clearance and a wider track.
Inside, the lower dash accentuates the openness of the cabin. A curved wall of screens visually cocoons the driver, and a larger 17.7-inch touchscreen sits over thin horizontal vents and climate buttons and dials. A new console design opens up more space for side-by-side cupholders and an available wireless smartphone charger. That space comes from Chevy migrating a new electronic gear shifter from the console to a stalk on the steering column.
2024 Chevrolet Traverse Performance
Ride quality pitches the Traverse into the above-average class.
With adequate turbo-4 power, the Traverse doesn’t overpromise in the speed department, but it delivers a well-composed ride that’s softer and subtler in its three lower grades. For that, it’s a 6 in performance.
How fast is the Chevrolet Traverse?
Power arrives via a new turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-4. A derivative of the 2.7-liter turbo-4 used in the Chevy Colorado mid-size pickup, this engine whurbles out 328 hp and 326 lb-ft of torque at a relatively high 3,500 rpm. Under full throttle, it has an amiable growl and propulsive 4-cylinder sound, but it takes a firm stomp on the pedal and a one-two count for it to respond with a surge of torque. With a curb weight between 4,504 and 4,793 pounds, it’s taxing each cylinder.
For what it’s worth, the outgoing V-6 in the 2023 Traverse made 310 hp and 266 lb-ft, and earned the same tow rating of 5,000 pounds.
Is the Chevrolet Traverse 4WD?
From its column-mounted shifter, the Traverse engages the gears of a new 8-speed automatic transmission that shuttle power to the front wheels or to an all-wheel-drive system that offers a simple front-rear torque split in most versions. In the Z71, the AWD setup’s upgraded to a twin-clutch system that can split power between the rear wheels as well, for more precise power application and better handling.
We haven’t tested a base Traverse yet, but the Z71 and RS have responsive steering and good compliance on the road, though their size never vanishes. With a MacPherson front and a five-link rear suspension, the Traverse uses its heft to its advantage. It smothers big bumps and lousy terrain even with the largest wheel option available.
It’s better in Z71 trim, with its all-terrain off-road gear but smaller, more pliant tires. It moves like it’s doing water aerobics as it steps down into a bump and glides past it, thanks to hydraulic rebound control damper. What’s going on at ground level remains at least a level or two removed from the cabin. Its 18-inch wheels don’t generate as much road noise as might be expected, and the standard terrain drive mode and towing package set it up for more than the usual three-row crossover duty.
That’s less true in the Traverse RS, which gives up some of that isolation for firmer suspension tuning and more steering heft, not to mention a set of low-profile 22-inch tires that file off bumps more abruptly than the Z71 does. It’s on the fringe of what big crossover-SUV buyers might want, but the Traverse RS still handles within reasonably taut limits.
2024 Chevrolet Traverse Comfort & Quality
The Traverse maxes out space and dresses for its upscale role.
With a 120.9-inch wheelbase, the Traverse sports nearly the same interior space as before. Its overall length of 204.5 inches is down less than half-inch. Last year the similar package scored a 9 for comfort and utility; this year’s edition gets the same 9 for its front and rear seats, its ability to seat at least five medium-sized passengers comfortably, and for a cargo area that’s tremendously useful and flexible.
Up to eight passengers find seats in the base LS and in some LT models. We’ve driven Traverses only in Z71 and RS trim, which don’t have the base cloth seats. The power-adjustable, synthetic-leather-clad units in the Z71 have terrific support and lots of adjustment, with standard heating but manual adjustment at the base trim level. A wide center console swallows smartphones, drink bottles, keys, USB-C cables, and lots of change.
The Traverse sports 44.3 inches of front legroom, and it’s nearly as good in row two, where it cashes in on 41.5 inches of legroom and wide-swinging doors for fantastic access. Trade out the standard bench for the twin captain’s chairs and the walk-through that divides them, and the Traverse becomes the uber-Uber machine, even with the panoramic roof that still grants plenty of headroom to tall passengers.
Row three is less happy for adults. It’s usable for 6-footers, but the bottom cushion sits low and it’s short, though headroom remains ample thanks to a bump up into the headliner. Even in the rearmost seats, passengers get USB-C ports and cupholders.
The flat-ish cargo area measures up to 97.6 cubic feet when the middle and rear seats are folded down; the middles sit higher, so the load floor has gaps and height differentials. Behind the third row, the 22.9 cubic-foot cargo area opens to 56.6 cubes with row three stowed, and there’s secret storage under the cargo floor.
The Traverse wears a better grade of trim in the top versions now, and even the RS seems tasteful enough, even with its red-and-black trim.
2024 Chevrolet Traverse Safety
The Traverse stocks great standard safety technology.
How safe is the Chevrolet Traverse?
Neither the NHTSA nor the IIHS has tested the updated Traverse, so we can’t assign it a score.
When we do, it won’t earn a point for rearward vision, which gets blocked by the thick roof pillars. That’s typical for big three-row SUVs like this one.
All Traverse SUVs now come with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitors, a surround-view camera system, and a driver seat that vibrates when the vehicle departs its lane.
On the options list, the Traverse now offers a rear camera mirror and Super Cruise, GM’s driver assistance which uses up to 400,000 miles of mapped roads to deliver hands-free driving. Super Cruise lets the driver drop their hands from the wheel while cameras and sensors govern the steering, cruise control, and brakes, nibbling across the lane even on 50-mph winding roads and avoiding traffic safely. There’s a loss of control that never will feel comfortable for many drivers, but it’s one of the best thought-out of the driver-assist systems, provided it’s used as intended: as backup.
2024 Chevrolet Traverse Features
It costs more now, but the Traverse has plenty of standard tech.
The base $38,995 Traverse LS offers eight seats, a 17.7-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an 11.0-inch digital gauges cluster with selectable views, cloth upholstery, heated front seats, remote start, and 18-inch wheels. It’s not a great value and the basic three-year/36,000-mile warranty is just that—basic—but the Traverse has great standard equipment and options, and solid Google built-in infotainment, to rate an 8 here.
All-wheel drive costs $2,000 on all but the Z71, where it’s standard. Chevy offers 20-inch wheels with all-season-tires on the LS and the LT editions.
Which Chevrolet Traverse should I buy?
Spend a little more—$41,395 to be exact—and get into the Traverse LT, which has a power driver seat, roof rails, wireless smartphone charging, a power tailgate, more soft-touch interior trim, a sliding second-row seat whether it’s a bench or twin captain’s chairs. Options include Super Cruise and a power sunroof, as well as synthetic leather upholstery.
If a modicum of off-road ability is a must, the $47,795 Traverse Z71 wears 265/65R18 all-terrain tires, has the spiffy twin-clutch AWD system, a skid plate, tow hooks, and 18-inch wheels with a trailer-tow package.
Both the LT and Z71 have options for automatic park assist, Bose audio, and a rear camera mirror.
How much is a fully loaded Chevrolet Traverse?
It’s $55,595 for the Traverse RS, which comes with 22-inch all-season tires, perforated leather upholstery, power-folding third-row seats, a panoramic roof, ambient lighting, and Bose audio. Chevy hasn’t announced a High Country model—yet.
2024 Chevrolet Traverse Fuel Economy
It’s slightly more efficient than before.
Is the Chevrolet Traverse good on gas?
Somewhat. Chevrolet publishes EPA-estimated fuel-economy at 20 mpg city, 27 highway, 23 combined for the front-drive Traverse. All-wheel-drive versions check in at 19/24/21 mpg. That’s better than last year’s ratings, which topped out at 21 mpg combined, but below the hybrid offerings from Toyota, which can reach 36 mpg combined in the Highlander Hybrid.
