    What's the story

Lucknow Super Giants beat Mumbai Indians in Match 48 of the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) season at the Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow. The Super Giants successfully chased down 145, with Marcus Stoinis anchoring their innings. MI took it down to the wire, but Nicholas Pooran saw LSG through. MI, the five-time IPL champions, have now suffered seven defeats in the ongoing edition.

    Match

    A look at match summary

MI slumped to 27/4 after LSG elected to field. While Ishan Kishan held his end, Hardik Pandya recorded a golden duck. The LSG bowlers struck in tandem before Nehal Wadhera and Tim David powered MI to 144/7. LSG lost Arshin Kulkarni early, but KL Rahul and Stoinis powered them. MI reduced LSG to 133/6 despite Stoinis's effort, with Pooran starring in the final over.

    Stoinis

    Match-winning knock from Stoinis

Although the Lucknow pitch supported spin, Stoinis remained unperturbed throughout his stay. He joined Rahul after Kulkarni departed for a duck. Stoins first shared 58 runs with Rahul and then had a brief partnership with Deepak Hooda. The Aussie batter eventually slammed his ninth half-century in the IPL. He fell to Mohammad Nabi for a 45-ball 62 (7 fours and 2 sixes).

    Information

    Stoinis earlier dismissed SKY

As mentioned, Stoinis also bowled the match's first over after LSG put MI in to bat. His first spell produced a crucial breakthrough in the form of Suryakumar Yadav. Stoinis eventually conceded 19 runs in three overs.

    Rohit

Another low score for Rohit on his birthday

Rohit Sharma looked solid after scoring a cheeky boundary early on. However, Mohsin Khan dismissed Rohit (4) soon after. Notably, the former MI skipper turned 37 on April 30. A look at his IPL scores in matches on his birthday: 17 vs DC (2009), 1 vs SRH (2014), 2 vs RR (2022), 3 vs RR (2023), and 4 vs LSG (2024).

    Information

Second-lowest Powerplay total in IPL 2024

MI stumbled in the Powerplay (first six overs), managing 28/4. This is now the second-lowest Powerplay totals in IPL 2024. Only Punjab Kings (27/3 vs Sunrisers Hyderabad in Mullanpur) are ahead.

    Bowlers

Mohsin takes two wickets; Naveen highly economical

Mohsin was the pick of LSG's bowlers, having taken two wickets for 36 runs in four overs. Stoinis, Naveen-ul-Haq, Mayank Yadav, and Ravi Bishnoi scalped a wicket each. Naveen recorded an economy rate of 3.91, the second-lowest by a seamer in IPL 2024 (three-plus overs). Meanwhile, Mayank once again went off the field after bowling 3.1 overs.

    Wadhera

    Wadhera top-scores for MI

Nehal Wadhera was MI's top scorer in the match. He scored a valuable 46 off 41 balls (4 fours and 2 sixes). The left-handed batter added 53 runs with Ishan (32) after the visitors were reduced to 27/4. Wadhera has now raced to 340 runs at 28.33 in the IPL. Besides, David smashed an 18-ball 35 (3 fours and 1 six) toward the end.

    Stats

    A look at other highlights

As per Cricbuzz, this was the first instance of chasing side winning in MI-LSG encounters across five IPL matches. Notably, Mohsin became the fourth different left-arm pacer to dismiss Rohit in the ongoing IPL season. Hardik, who recorded a golden duck, later took two wickets for 26 runs in four overs. Ayush Badoni's dismissal through run-out turned out to be controversial.
