Xbox Games Showcase coming this summer alongside mysterious game reveal

Microsoft has set the date for its Xbox Games Showcase this June. It’s also teasing a Direct that will immediately follow the showcase, but won’t say what that’s for just yet.

The Xbox Games Showcase will return at 10 a.m. PT on June 9. Like all of its showcases, Microsoft plans to stream this presentation across its YouTube, Twitch, and Facebook, although it will also give away tickets to see the show in person via Xbox FanFest. According to the Xbox Wire post announcing the livestream, this is Microsoft’s “first Showcase featuring games from our portfolio of studios across Activision, Blizzard, Bethesda, and Xbox Game Studios, in addition to titles from our third-party partners.”

Xbox has a strong lineup for the back half of 2024 that includes games like Ara: History Untold, Avowed, Age of Mythology: Retold, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, Towerborne, and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, so it has quite a bit to show this year. The biggest mystery surrounding the showcase right now is what unannounced game is taking the Direct slot immediately following the Xbox Game Showcase. Last year, that slot went to Starfield, so whatever game it is has big shoes to fill.

The “Redacted Direct,” as Microsoft is currently calling it, will begin right after the Xbox Game Showcase wraps up. The Xbox Wire post teases that it will be “a special deep dive into the next installment of a beloved franchise.” The most likely candidates for something like this would be a new Gears or Call of Duty title, but for now, we just have to wait on an official announcement from Xbox, Bethesda, or Activision Blizzard.

The Xbox Games Showcase followed by Redacted Direct begins at 10 a.m. PT on June 9.

Playground Games has not yet confirmed if another Forza Horizon game is in the works at this time, so Xbox fans can play this game to fill that void until a new one is announced.

Activision may be under new ownership at Xbox, but that’s not slowing down its flagship series. After a few years in development, Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile is finally launching worldwide under the Microsoft banner. It’s a major moment for the shooter series that’s endured multiple industry changes over its long lineage. The importance of that evolution isn’t lost on Chris Plummer, the co-head of mobile at Activision. In an interview with Digital Trends ahead of Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile’s launch, Plummer painted a picture of how much has changed in the game industry since Call of Duty Mobile launched in 2019. An industry-shifting war between Epic Games and Apple, an enormous acquisition that’s turned Xbox into a mobile king, and a gradual shift in the general attitude towards mobile games -- all of that has led to this moment. Plummer believes that the old days of players bemoaning cash-grab mobile games are coming to an end. The industry just needed its killer app; he believes Warzone Mobile could be that game.

Microsoft unveiled the batch of titles coming to its gaming subscription service throughout the back half of March. Quite a few awesome titles are making their way to the service, but by far, the most notable addition is Diablo IV, the first Activision Blizzard game being made available on Xbox Game Pass.

Diablo IV was released in June 2023, just a few months before Microsoft completed its acquisition of Activision Blizzard. It's the latest entry in a long-running isometric RPG series, and it retains the same engaging dungeon design, deep progression systems, and captivating loot loop that makes games in this franchise special. People have been wondering when Activision Blizzard games would arrive on Xbox Game Pass in the months since the acquisition process was completed, and Diablo IV was finally confirmed to be coming to the service on March 28 last month.
