Family law in Ireland needs a drastic shake-up. In its current form it is not working for adults and, as our recent research highlighted, it is not working for children either.
The adversarial nature of the system doesn’t help matters. Put very simply, there are winners and there are losers. As one mother in one of our earlier research studies said: “It’s like a debating competition, about whoever [barrister] shouts the loudest”.
