New Delhi: Polling for the second phase of the 2024 Parliament Election on 88 seats of the Lok Sabha ended Friday April 26, 2024 with a voter turnout of 64.2%.

The Election Commission of India said the polling percentage in the 2nd phase of the 2024 General Elections was 64.2% till 10:00 PM.

The Commission said the voting percentage is likely to go up further as people were lined up at many polling stations to cast their votes at the time the poll panel released the latest data.

Total seats 88

In the second phase of polls for the 18th Lok Sabha elections, 88 seats across 13 states and Union Territories went to polls. This included all 20 seats of Kerala, 14 of the 28 seats in Karnataka, 13 seats in Rajasthan, 08 seats each in Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, 06 seats in Madhya Pradesh, 05 seats each in Assam and Bihar, 03 seats each in Chhattisgarh and West Bengal, and 01 seat each in Manipur, Tripura and Jammu and Kashmir.

Polling in the second phase was originally scheduled for 89 seats. However, polling in Madhya Pradesh’s Betul was rescheduled after the death of a BSP candidate. Betul will now vote in the third phase, due on May 7.

Prominent candidates

Among the prominent candidates are Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi (Wayanad, Kerala), BJP’s Tejasvi Surya (Bangalore South, Karnataka), Hema Malini and Arun Govil (Both from Uttar Pradesh), Om Birla (Kota, Rajasthan), Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar’s brother DK Suresh (Bangalore Rural, Karnataka), former Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy (Mandya, Karnataka).

In addition to the above candidates entering the poll fray, a close contest is likely to be witnessed in Thiruvananthapuram between Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar and Congress leader Shashi Tharoor.

The voting percentage in second phase is about 5% less than the 2019 elections when the percentage was 69.64%.

The EC pointed that sluggish voting in mainly three states, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, was the reason behind the lower overall poll percent. Maharashtra registered a turnout of 59.6%, Bihar 57% and Uttar Pradesh 54.8%, as opposed to 63%, 63% and 62%, respectively, in 2019.

Kerala recorded a poll percentage of 67.15% turnout at 11 pm Friday, while its turnout in 2019 was 78%.

Karnataka, which had half of its 28 seats go to polls on Friday, had 68.38% turnout at 11 pm, while the turnout in the same 14 seats had been 67% in 2019. The remaining 14 constituencies of the state will vote in the third phase on May 7.

The lone seat in Tripura where polling was held on Friday recorded 79.59% turnout as compared to 82.9% in 2019.

Key Highlights

Polling time was extended till 6 PM in many polling stations in Banka, Madhepura, Khagaria and Munger constituencies in Bihar to facilitate voters in hot weather conditions Special arrangements were made to combat the heat including provision of shamiyana, drinking water, medical kits, fans for convenience of voters

In phase 2, voters from 46 villages in Bastar and Kanker PCs in Chhattisgarh cast their vote in a polling booth set up in their own village for the first time in a Lok Sabha Election.

The first phase of the Lok Sabha Polls had covered 102 seats spread across 21 states, with the Election Commission recording a voter turnout of around 64%. The poll percent in the first phase too was lower than what the country had seen in the 2019 elections.

The elections for the 18th Lok Sabha is being held in 07 Phases. Polling for the 3rd Phase will be held on May 07, 2024.

The counting of votes of all the seven phases will be held simultaneously on June 04, 2024.
