    What's the story

Adobe is set to transform its Photoshop software with the introduction of advanced AI tools, supported by the company's state-of-the-art Firefly Image 3 foundation model. Currently under testing in the Photoshop beta desktop app, these tools are expected to be generally available later this year. The most prominent among them is the Reference Image tool, which uses user-uploaded pictures to guide Adobe's AI in producing outputs that reflect similar style and color elements.

    User convenience

Advantages of Reference Image tool explained

Adobe's Chief Technology Officer for Digital Media, Ely Greenfield, emphasized the advantages of the new Reference Image tool. He stated, "Prompting is a pain in the butt. Why spend an hour trying to craft a three-paragraph prompt if you have an image that you've created that's exactly the thing you want to reference?" Greenfield further added that this tool embodies the saying 'a picture is worth a thousand words.'

    Copyright protection

Adobe is developing a universal "Do Not Train" tag

Adobe is developing a universal "do not train" tag to ensure users hold rights for any images they wish to reference. This development is part of Adobe's Content Authenticity Initiative. The new AI tools suite also includes Generate Background for creating new background images for product photography, and Enhance Detail for improving image clarity and sharpness.

    Firefly upgrade

Adobe's Firefly model promises superior image generation capabilities

The third iteration of Adobe's Firefly model promises superior image generation capabilities in comparison to its predecessor. It excels at interpreting lengthy descriptive text prompts, and can generate clearer text within images. This model is open for public testing outside of Photoshop through the Firefly web application. The AI tools suite also includes Generate Similar and Generate Image, which allow users to create similar content or an entire image from a text description, respectively.

    Creative expedite

Photoshop gets new tools for quick image alterations

Adobe is enhancing Photoshop with new standard tools designed to expedite creative processes. These include an Adjustment Brush for making non-destructive changes like color adjustments to specific parts of an image. Other additions include Adjustment Presets for quick image alterations using filters, and an enhanced Font Browser that provides instant access to over 25,000 fonts in Adobe's cloud without leaving the Photoshop application.

    AI integration

Adobe is confident that these tools will simplify Photoshop use

A year after integrating generative AI-powered editing capabilities into Photoshop, Adobe continues to enhance its flagship product with more AI. Erin Boyce, Photoshop's Senior Marketing Director, said, "A big, blank canvas can sometimes be the biggest barrier. This really speeds up time to creation. The idea of getting something from your mind to the canvas has never been easier." Adobe is confident that these tools will simplify Photoshop use for both professionals and hobbyists.
