Through Tonight: Mainly clear conditions should team up with light to calm winds, which is usually a good recipe for maximizing cold outside the urban centers. Lows should be mainly in the 30s near and outside the Beltway, with up to low or mid-40s for downtown.
“Temperatures as low as 34 will result in frost formation,” wrote the Weather Service wrote.
Why frost with temperatures above freezing? With calm winds and often a layer of warmer air a few thousand feet up cold air very effectively sinks to the ground. Since official temperatures we refer to are observed at 2 meters, 34 degrees at that height can easily be at or below freezing on the ground. And in the image above, warm spots are not just the cities. Higher elevations along the Blue Ridge and in northern Maryland show up, as well.

Tomorrow (Tuesday): We should see lots of sun through the day. This would help temperatures rapidly rise off chilly morning lows to afternoon temperatures close to 70 degrees. Winds from the south should peak around 10 mph, with gusts to 20 mph.
