Proton Mail introduces 'Dark Web Monitoring' feature: How it works

    What's the story

Proton Mail has launched a unique cybersecurity feature, called 'Dark Web Monitoring,' exclusively for its premium users. The new feature is designed to alert users about potential data breaches or leaks. It will notify users if their personal information has been found on the dark web, providing details such as the compromised service and the personal data obtained by attackers.

    User alerts

    A proactive security measure

To receive alerts, users will initially need to visit the Proton Mail Security Center via web or desktop. The company plans to introduce email and in-app notifications soon. If a user's credentials are compromised in a data breach of a third-party service, such as a social media platform, this feature will promptly notify them. This allows users to take quick action before any potential damage occurs.

    Premium only

    Not available for free users

The 'Dark Web Monitoring' feature aligns with Proton Mail's commitment to privacy and security, complementing its existing end-to-end encryption. However, it should be noted that this feature will not be available to free users. Eamonn Maguire, head of Anti-Abuse and Account Security at Proton, stated, "While data breaches of third-party sites leading to the leak of personal information can never be entirely avoided, automated early warning can help users stay vigilant and mitigate worse side effects such as identity theft."
