    What's the story

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra has declared her income and assets in a 14-page poll affidavit filed before a returning officer. Moitra is contesting for the Krishanagar Lok Sabha seat in West Bengal. The document reveals her earnings for the fiscal year 2022-23 as ₹12,07,541 and includes details of valuable possessions such as a ₹80 lakh diamond ring and a ₹30 lakh art collection.

    Financial growth

    Moitra's income shows significant increase

The affidavit shows Moitra's income has seen a considerable increase compared to fiscal year 2018-19, when she earned ₹5,51,080. It also lists other assets, including 150 grams of gold valued at ₹9.41 lakh, a silver dinner set worth ₹2.72 lakh, and a silver tea set priced at ₹1.17 lakh. The total estimated value of her jewelry collection is around ₹3.5 crore.

    Asset details

Moitra's affidavit reveals no immovable assets

Interestingly, Moitra's affidavit states that she does not own any immovable assets, such as farmland or residential properties. However, it discloses several bank accounts, including one with NatWest Bank in London with a balance of ₹5,35,850. Additionally, she has two fixed deposits with a private bank, one with an amount of ₹33.4 lakh and another with an amount of ₹1.45 crore.

    Legal troubles

Ongoing criminal case against Moitra disclosed

The affidavit also reveals an ongoing criminal case against Moitra lodged by the Central Bureau of Investigation's (CBI) Anti-Corruption Branch in New Delhi. The case pertains to allegations of "criminal conspiracy, offenses related to public servant being bribed, offense relating to bribing of a public servant and abetment." She has been accused of allegedly taking bribes from businessman Darshan Hiranandani to pose questions in Parliament, targeting Adani Group and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

    Expulsion

Moitra expelled from Lok Sabha for 'unethical conduct'

In December 2023, Moitra was expelled from the Lok Sabha for "unethical conduct" following a Parliamentary Committee investigation into these allegations. She has consistently denied these allegations, labeling them as "politically motivated." During a recent election campaign, she expressed confidence about winning the Lok Sabha elections from the Krishanagar seat. Krishnanagar Lok Sabha constituency will go to the polls on May 13 (Phase 4).
