The Steamboat girls tennis team’s regular season has come to a close following a match against Aspen on Monday. Despite the cold temps, windy conditions and mixture of snow and rain, the Sailors prevailed 5-2.

Sophomore Lucia del Haya dominated at No. 1 singles, winning her match 6-1, 6-1. The No. 2 doubles tandem of Taylor Rockford and Amanda Dietrich swept their match 6-0, 6-0.

Next up for the Sailors will be the regional tournament in Grand Junction at Canyon View Park on May 2-3. Those who place first or second at regionals will earn a bid to the state championship in Colorado Springs from May 9-11.

Queens of the greens

Playing in two more tournaments this week, the Steamboat girls golf team competed in the Aspen Skiers Invitational Tuesday and took fifth in a field of seven schools.

Senior Catherine Larock shot an 89 in Aspen. She took a birdie on the par-five 10th hole and placed fifth.

On Wednesday, the girls took on the Glenwood Demons RVR Championship and placed first overall, thanks to dominant play by sophomore Katharina Cosby and Larock.

Cosby shot a 78 on the par-72 course with two birdies on the day. She placed second individually in the tournament. Larock was not far behind, finishing fifth with a 94.

League champs or bust

With eyes set on winning back-to-back league titles, the Steamboat boys lacrosse team is two wins away from making that goal a reality.

Coming off six consecutive victories, the Sailors sit at 11-2 on the year and 9-1 in league play. They are coming off a dominant senior night victory over Glenwood Springs on Wednesday, where eight players scored at least one goal and Steamboat cruised to a 14-5 win.

The Sailors will use spring break to rest their bodies and prepare for two of the most important games of the regular season. The first is a road game at Eagle Valley on May 1, and the second will have league champion implications with Steamboat at Battle Mountain on May 3.

Finn Rodgers charges into the offensive zone in a boys lacrosse game Wednesday, April 17, 2024, at SSHS. In their last home game of the regular season, the Sailors celebrated senior night and won 14-5. Steamboat’s record is now 10-2.

Girls lacrosse hits a speed bump

Steamboat girls lacrosse has won just one of its last six games with an 11-5 victory over Summit on April 11. Since that game, the Sailors have fallen twice — once to Fruita Monument and once to Golden — on the road.

The girls currently sit third in the 4A Mountain East division with Aspen not far behind. Steamboat has two challenging games coming out of the break against Eagle Valley on May 1 and Battle Mountain on May 3. Both games will be played at home.

Steamboat baseball loses fourth straight

Since defeating Rifle for the first time in seven seasons at the start of April, the Steamboat Springs baseball team has hit a slow stretch, losing four games in a row.

The Sailors traveled to Meeker on April 10, losing both games of the double-header and were outscored 12-4 on the day. Sophomore Fred Lohne pitched a solid six-inning second game, allowing just three runs on five hits, but the Sailors were unable to get the bats going in a 3-2 loss.

Steamboat was back on the diamond Thursday at Glenwood Springs. The Sailors struggled to stop the Demons offense in both games, losing 14-5 and then 17-2.

Steamboat is 5-9 on the season and 1-7 in league play with seven games remaining on the regular season schedule. Next up is a home game against Basalt on May 1.

Playoff hopes still alive

With the longest stretch between games of any Routt County team, the Steamboat girls soccer team last played on April 13 and won’t play again until May 2.

The girls had a stacked schedule the past two weeks, playing seven games in 15 days and winning four of them. The Sailors entered spring break following a 3-0 loss to Fruita Monument, but with a 6-5-2 record, a chance at the playoffs is still in play.

The girls will host Battle Mountain on May 2 before concluding the regular season May 4 at Centaurus.

The Steamboat Springs girls soccer team celebrates a goal off the foot of junior Olivia Golaszewski, who tied the game against Palisade on Wednesday, March 27, 2024. The game resulted in a 2-2 tie.

Sailors, Tigers, Rams on the podium

The Steamboat Springs and Hayden track and field teams met up in Glenwood Springs for the Demon Invitational on April 13.

The Sailors earned several podium finishes on the day, including second place in the 1,600 meter run by senior Michael Hagney with a time of 5:04.67. Along with taking second in the 110 meter hurdles, Austin Prost won the 300 meter hurdles in 39.05 seconds.

As usual, junior Brandon Kolb dominated in his jumps, winning the high jump and triple jump.

For the Hayden Tigers, Ella Harris was fifth in the 400 meter dash, Jenna Kleckler was second in long jump and Dakota Munden placed fifth and seventh in discus and shot put, respectively.

The Soroco Rams most recently competed at the Battle Mountain Husky Invitational on Tuesday where Nick Clark was the 3,200 meter champion for the boys.

Soroco’s Alayna Edwards found her way to a third-place position in the 100 meter dash while Larhae Whaley finished second in the 300 meter hurdles and third in pole vault. Daisy Hoff was the Invitational champion for discus and placed third in shot put.
