On Tuesday, April 16, 2024, a landmark event took place at the newly expanded Tepic International Airport in Riviera Nayarit with the successful touchdown of its first test flight. This event marks the beginning of a new chapter for the region, enhancing connectivity and opening up fresh opportunities for the northern coastline and the majestic Sierra Madre mountains.
“Today we can declare that the Tepic airport is international,” said Alejandro Muñoz de Cote Ortiz, who represents the Riviera Nayarit International Airport. “Today we completed the test flight to show that the airport is secure for all aircraft and that the Tepic airport is ready for commercial and international operations.”
The upgrade of Riviera Nayarit International Airport (TPQ) is a pivotal development for Nayarit’s tourism sector. With its upgraded facilities now capable of handling international flights, the airport is set to become a vital entry point for visitors eager to experience the diverse offerings of this vibrant area. The renaming of the airport last year positions it as a compelling alternative to Puerto Vallarta’s airport for international tourists visiting the Nayarit regions.
Historically serving as the primary airport for Nayarit’s interior, Tepic International Airport’s enhancement, including a new terminal soon to be launched, heralds increased tourist activities across the state—from Sayulita to San Blas and into the heart of Sierra Madre’s culture, nature, and Pueblos Magicos.
Additionally, a newly constructed highway linking Tepic to the Magical Town of Compostela will halve the journey time to 30 minutes, facilitating easier access to areas like Sayulita, San Pancho, and beyond. This connection promises quicker access to prime destinations such as Conrad Punta Mita and One&Only Mandarina, reducing the travel time from Tepic airport to Punta Mita to just over an hour.
“The expansion of Tepic’s airport is expected to have a transformative impact on the region’s economy, creating new opportunities for job growth and investment” said Juan Enrique Suarez del Real Tostado, Minister of Tourism of the State of Nayarit. “By enhancing connectivity and accessibility, the airport will serve as a catalyst for the development of tourism infrastructure, supporting local businesses and communities throughout Nayarit.”
Further enhancing the traveler’s experience, Riviera Nayarit International Airport will introduce an all-digital immigration process to expedite entry formalities.
The final element awaiting completion is the new terminal, with a soft launch expected in September 2024 and a full operational start in early 2025. Currently, negotiations are underway to introduce regular international flights from the U.S. and Canada, anticipating an initial capacity of four million passengers annually, potentially expanding to twenty million.
Nayarit, Mexico invites travelers to explore its stunning landscapes, rich culture, and diverse traditions. Positioned along the Pacific Coast, this enchanting region offers beautiful beaches, dense jungles, and quaint colonial towns, ideal for relaxation and adventure. Visitors can immerse themselves in everything from the pristine beaches of Sayulita and Punta Mita to the lush inland jungles and cultural richness of the Sierra de Vallejo and Huichol territories.
With the enhanced Tepic airport now welcoming international flights, accessing the diverse attractions of Nayarit has never been easier, making it an irresistible destination for those drawn to its unique charm and beauty.
