India's power consumption increased by nearly 10 per cent year on year (YoY) to 70.66 billion units (BU) in April first half from 64.24 MU in the year-ago period, power ministry data show, implying improved economic activities and consumption patterns.

The ministry has projected a peak power demand of 260 GW between April and June due to expected longer duration of heat wave. Peak power demand had hit an all-time high of 243 GW in September last year.

The peak power demand met (the highest supply in a day), rose to about 218 GW in the first half of April compared to 206 GW in the same period a year ago. The highest supply in a day during April last year was about 216 GW.

Experts feel Indian consumers are raising their energy consumption on appliances and gadgets as is the trend in the developed world, a news agency reported.

The rise in use of electricity in buses, cars, trishaws and the railways has also changed the consumption pattern and raised per capita use, they added.
