State wildlife officials have confirmed the deaths of four cattle found dead over two days in Grand County were a result of a wolf or wolves.
According to Colorado Parks and Wildlife, a possible depredation in Grand County was reported Wednesday after it likely happened Monday night or Tuesday morning. State wildlife officials found three deceased yearlings that showed signs they had been preyed upon by wolves.
CPW explained that a storm brought a foot of snow to the area Tuesday, covering up the carcasses and delaying their discovery until Wednesday.
On Thursday, CPW reported it had received news of a possible fourth depredation at the same property in Grand County.
According to CPW, the ensuing field investigation also found evidence confirming that the fourth head of cattle was killed by a wolf or wolves, including hemorrhaging and partially consumed hindquarters.
In a statement, CPW said the wolf or wolves that were in the area at the time of the depredation were part of the 10 wolves that were reintroduced to Colorado in December.
This is at least the sixth livestock animal killed by wolves in Colorado in 2024. CPW confirmed a wolf killed a calf in Grand County on April 2 and another calf was killed around April 7 in Jackson County.
According to CPW, the agency reimburses individuals for damages caused by gray wolves to livestock and livestock guard animals, and livestock producers who submit a claim may be eligible for the fair market value of livestock lost to wolf depredation.
Additionally, CPW said the Colorado Department of Agriculture and CPW are finalizing a range rider plan to help livestock producers deter wolf and livestock conflicts.
