National Slow Down day: Gardaí detect driver travelling 112kmh in 50kmh zone

A driver has been caught travelling 112kmh in a 50kmh zone as part of National Slow Down Day.

National Slow Down Day is a Garda operation reminding drivers to comply with the speed limits.

In the first five hours of National Slow Down Day, GoSafe checked the speeds of 41,630 vehicles, and detected 81 vehicles travelling in excess of the applicable speed limit.

These figures are based on GoSafe detections only. They will be higher with An Garda Síochána personnel detections, which are not available at the moment.

A driver was caught speeding 112kmh in a 50kmh zone on the Main Street, Charleville, Cork. Another driver was detected travelling 109kmh in a 80kmh zone on the R314 Rathroeen in Ballina.

Another motorist that was found travelling 132kmh in a 100kmh zone was caught by gardaí on the N13 Teevickmoy in Stranorlar, Co Donegal.

On the R139 in Belcamp, Dublin 17, a motorist was caught travelling 84kmh in a 60kmh zone.

Gardaí also detected a driver travelling 64kmh in a 50kmh zone on the Dublin Road in Kilkenny.

Other notable speeds include 63kmh in a 50kmh zone on the Monivea Road in Galway, 95kmh in a 80kmh zone on the N55 Lissoy Glasson in Westmeath, 121kmh in a 100kmh zone on the N21 Rineroe, Adare, Limerick and 113kmh in a 100kmh zone on the N30 Ballymackesy in Enniscorthy, Co Wexford.

As of 10am this morning, a total of 63 people lost their lives on Irish roads this year, with five lives lost in April. It means that, on average, someone has been killed on our roads every 36 hours this year.

Gardaí continue to appeal to drivers to comply with speed limits to reduce the number of speed-related collisions.
