Skarvan: Celebrating Earth Day

How will locals, who deeply love and greatly enjoy our backyard, be celebrating Earth Day on April 22?

There are some simple ways to show how much Mother Earth means to us and give back for all we’re blessed with each day. Giving back is a feel-good thing because it is good. There are many ways to show the love, including picking up litter. Simply bend at the waist, and pick up the waste. Use a pet pick-up or gloves because litter is dirty. Dirtiness is why litter doesn’t get picked up more often. But, if you think about it, litter is the one kind of pollution of which we can easily be the solution.

Scandinavian cultures, including Swedes, live their passion for nature each day and have creatively and beautifully combined recreation and cleaning up the environment, a recent trend “plogging” or picking up litter while jogging. As a caring, cycling Swede, I’m promoting riding bikes and picking up litter. We call it Pristine Riders, whose mission is to clean up litter and share the message to create the powerful multiplier effect.

It can be Earth Day every day! Locals of Nordic descent and otherwise are invited to our 9th Annual Pristine Riders Trash Crush being held 10 a.m.-noon, May 24. We’ll meet at North Star Nature Preserve’s South Gate to gear up, perform a clean-up of our roads and paths, and then enjoy lunch courtesy of Silverpeak Grill & Buck. Biking or walking is encouraged.

Caring for our backyard is dearly needed. It may be someone else’s litter, but it’s our backyard! Contact sundog@sopris.net for details and registration. “Like” Pristine Riders on Facebook for updates, including how to join our pristine loving pack and score a free Pristine Riders bike jersey!
